The National Healthcare Group (NHG) has set up a Diabetes Registry, the first in Singapore and Southeast Asia . The registry is designed to draw out conclusions about the state of diabetes in this part of the world.
According to a National Health Survey in 2004, at least 330,000 people aged between 18 and 69 suffer from diabetes in Singapore . The diabetes registry gathers data from some 138,151 diabetics.
Diabetes is linked to a number of complications, some of which are life threatening. These include heart, kidney and blood vessel damage, as well as retinopathy and amputation. Diabetes is apparently the 7th leading cause of death in Singapore.
