The BBC have issued a fresh report on the phenomena of ‘diabulimia.’ This recently highlighted trend is for young diabetic people to skip insulin injections to lose weight . Missing regular doses of insulin can cause diabetic people to lose weight rapidly, an attractive proposition for many.
The scale of the problem could be larger than previously thought. Leading UK diabetes charity, Diabetes UK, have gone on record saying that it could affect as many as one-third of type 1 diabetic young women.
The trend has been labeled ‘diabulimia.’ This type of eating disorder can wreak havoc on the body, causing heart and kidney disease, blindness and other complications. Those people who do fall into the trap should seek expert help, psychological care, and support to help manage their condition, the BBC concluded.
