A new glycaemic index test centre has been set up in Chennai by the Diabetes Research Foundation. The centre will analyse blood glucose response to different types of food. The GI data will be important in helping various groups select food to manage and prevent diabetes.
V. Moha, the Chairman of the Diabetes Research Foundatio, outlined the purpose of the centre to measure the rate at which food is digested and converted into blood glucose. He went further, saying that refined cereals were replacing whole grains, leaving millions unwittingly damaging their health .
Other Indian experts were quick to praise the function of the centre. One research nutritionist, Sudha Vasudeva, reportedly commented that the GI data would be useful for people to make food choices. Treating diabetes effectively hinges on understanding and implementing this data .
