Unlike Avandia, the Glaxo diabetes drug that hit a media firestorm earlier this year when it was revealed that the drug greatly increased the potential of diabetes patients developing heart problems, Actos has been found to be beneficial and lower the risk of heart attack by some 38 per cent.
Actos is a pioglitazone, a drug class that researchers now say is safe. The findings were presented at the 43rd Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.
Heart attack and stroke risk were both reduced, by 38 per cent and 20 per cent respectively. Pioglitazone was found to improve blood lipid levels and keep HbA1c levels lower. Being aware of your diabetes drug options can make all the difference between saving lives and major diabetic complications on account of fluctuating blood glucose levels.
