According to a recent report by biochemists at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society, doctors may have found a protein in Alligator blood that contain potentially powerful antibiotics .
Alligators are known to have a strong constitution and immune system, but their blood was not previously known to contain strong antiobiotic properties. The proteins within the blood have been found to be lethal to fungin, viruses and other bacteria.
Treatment using alligator blood could have a role to play in treating the ulcers that cause many type 1 and type 2 diabetics to face major neuropathic problems, including amputation .
Co-author of the study, Mark Merchant PhD. Of McNeese State University was reported in the diabetic news as commenting: “We’re very excited about the potential of these alligator blood proteins as both antibacterial and antifungal agents. There’s a real possibility that you could be treated with an alligator blood product one day.”
