A new study conducted on rats indicates that swapping canola (rapeseed) protein for milk protein could help to delay the onset of insulin resistance and even protect against the development of diabetes .
The study, which was conducted in the British Journal of Nutrition, indicates how important dietary proteins can be in controlling insulin levels in the body.
The lead author of the study, Francois Mariotti of the Institut National De La Research Agronomique, reportedly commented: “This effect is important inasmuch as it is of a magnitude similar to that afforded by the dual substitution of n-3 polyunsaturated fat for saturated fat and starch for sucrose. The quality of dietary protein may be an underestimated parameter in dietary strategies against the metabolic syndrome.”
The research team reportedly continued: “In this model, substituting rapeseed protein for milk protein had preventive effects on the early onset of insulin resistance, similar to those achieved by manipulating the types of dietary fat and carbohydrate .”
