Diabetes care should come from primary care

A GP in Dublin has claimed that developing specialist diabetes care services is not necessarily essential. Because of the sheer volumes of people suffering from diabetes, totally relying on specialist centres to provide diabetes treatment might not even be feasible, the doctor said.
Dr. John Latham, a GP in Dublin who works in the Primary Care Team and is actively involved in Diabetes care, said that GP services could be effective in diabetes treatment .
Dr Latham was reported as commenting: “It will be very extensive both in terms of time and cost. But I think it is vital because specialist clinics just don’t have the capacity to deal with the bulging numbers of people with Type 2 diabetes .”
Latham pointed to how a GP could set up diabetic treatment, with a team involving a dieticia, ophthalmologist, podiatrist, and two nurses.
