Promising diabetes study in mice

Thu, 26 Jun 2008
An experimental new diabetes vaccine that targets the immune system cells could both prevent and reverse diabetes amongst mice. The research was conducted at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pennsylvania.

The results, which were published in journal Diabetes, showed the effects of a diabetes vaccine that could delay and even prevent the onset of diabetes . Dr. Giannoukakis reportedly commented: "Certainly, (this vaccine) will not 'reverse' disease in a person who has had diabetes for more than 5 years."

The near future will see efficiency and safety testing amongst volunteers suffering from type 1 diabetes . Pending success at this stage, the research tem will move into full-blown human clinical trials .
