60 per cent risk of diabetes in Saudi Arabia

Wed, 26 Mar 2008
According to recent reports by the American Diabetes Association, people living in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf could face a lifetime risk as high as 60 per cent of developing diabetes .

However, according to experts in the region, diabetes is widely known and understood throughout the kingdom, and the future could see better diabetes prevention in the region.

Dr. John Buse, speaking on behalf of the American Diabetes Association, reportedly commented: "It is very scary; most people would contract diabetes if they didn’t have the awareness of how to prevent the disease."

Like several other areas of the world, genetically inherited traits combined with modern diet and lifestyle are creating a diabetes minefield. With a constant supply of food, much of it unhealthy, and little need for physical labour for the majority of people, many more people are developing diabetes throughout their lifetimes.
