Researchers in the UK are investigating the cause of diabetes and marked World Diabetes Day last Saturday. The team at University of the Highlands and Islands have been running a series of clinical trials at a laboratory in Inverness.
Two separate diabetes research projects are underway. Diabetes researchers are trying to better understand how eating oatcakes, muesli and porridge can help people with type 2 diabetes to treat their condition.
The second project examines how gluten -rich food could trigger schizophrenia, and the link between this and diabetes . Tissue in the bodies of sufferers who could not handle gluten were found to be damaged. The researchers are hoping to find out further links between the two diseases.
