According to diabetes news, eating a low-carbohydrate Mediterranean style diet as opposed to a low-fat diet, patients with diabetes could postpone the need for diabetes medication to control their condition.
Only 44% of newly diagnosed patients with diabetes required drug therapy in addition to their diet to control diabetes, as opposed to 70% of those on a low-fat diet. The study, conducted by Italian researchers, was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine .
The authors reportedly commented: “Perhaps most important, the findings reinforce the message that benefits of lifestyle interventions should not be overlooked, despite the drug-intensive style of medicine fueled by the current medical literature.”
Few studies have yet compared these diets in relation to diabetes .
