Fat and dietary habits amongst ancestors can predict type 2 diabetes, according to a recent study in America. Having a family history is already well known as a risk for developing the condition, but the recent research indicates some of the specifics.
The research was conducted by experts at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. The team based their research on the knowledge that having a close relative with type 2 diabetes increases risk, and researched whether weight and lifestyle factors could also be involved.
The researchers examined results of the Nurses’ Health Study. Over 73,000 records were developed, some 5,101 of whom developed diabetes . The study was reported in diabetes journal Diabetes Care . Doctor Van Dam reportedly commented that the study will: “suggest that most of the association between family history of diabetes and diabetes risk remains unexplained.”
