However, we really can make a 'diabetic- friendly' smoothie by avoiding ingredients that would raise our blood sugar levels quickly.

To this end, I use those fruits that have the lowest glycemic load according to the Glycemic Index.

Typically, when my wife prepares a smoothie for me, it contains unsweetened orange juice, steel cut oats, flax seed, apple, blueberries and/ or strawberries, cucumber, sweet pepper, celery, carrot and sometimes nuts, if available.

As for carrots and parsnips, these veggies have glycemic loads of 2 and 4 respectively, which place both of these veggies well within the low glycemic range which is 0 to 10.
