I am so frustrated right now its unreal, from the 16th Sept to now I have been bleeding (I'm not meant to have periods) my blood sugars have been reaching 30 no matter how much insulin I have, I feel like I've been beaten up, my head hurts my shoulders and neck, I have a rash on my neck, my tummy hurts, I feel sick and dizzy, I'm very thirsty but not hungry. Gave in and went to a&e yesterday, sugars still high, but no ketones, just alot of sugar in my urine bare in mind I'm so careful what I put in my body now, I'm not pregnant either obvs. Blood pressure a bit low, sugars still high. They do a simple ultra sound of my stomach which they found just food in there, duurrrr! So they just blamed everything on my period basically, I dont understand how sugar in my urine is because of my period, and I dont understand my head feeling as bad as it does being cause of my period. I must go back in a couple of days if things dont calm down and I'm too rest. I've got a job to be going to. Arghhhh..

Hi @RoseShiel Have you seen your GP about the bleeding ? They would be first to cross off on my list, what contraception are you on ? Also have your contacted your diabetic nurse to get some advice on adjusting your correction doses ?

Are you type 1 or type 2? How long have you been diabetic?

As a type 1 there's many things which can increase my glucose levels. Being a male I can't obviously relate to the issue you may have. But I find illness/stress etc. causes my glucose levels to raise and stay high. I have to increase basal insulin by a significant amount (50%) to manage this and then inject as usual for food etc.

@RoseShiel periods, and the stress of the unexpected can lead to raised BG. And when our BG gets high, we experience insulin resistance which makes it harder for us to get our BG under control. I find I can need twice as much to correct when my BG approaches the twenties.
High BG can cause head aches so it may be a bit of a domino effect - bleeding -> high BG -> head aches

And thirst is a symptom of high BG which is why it is one of the symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes.

Ten days is a long time for bleeding, especially if you are not supposed to be.
I think if I was in your position, I would badger my GP to work out why.

Ah I missed that tbh, it is in Type 1. I looked at profile for information which wasn't available.

Illness pushes up blood sugars, have you been following sick day rules? (basically a combo of increasing insulin and testing). High blood sugars (anything above 10) puts sugar in your urine, at 30 you'll be peeing sugar.

Your head feeling bad could be because of your illness and high blood sugars. No one is going to feel other than **** with blood sugars of 30, and well done on you for keeping ketones out of play. And yes, it's disappointing (to put it mildly) that the hospital haven't given you any help on reducing your levels.

But, if you're not supposed to be having periods (mirena, pill, whatever) then you should go to your GP and get sorted out. A&E are trained to deal with acute life threatening issues. They've possibly decided that your issue is hormonal/period related and as you haven't got ketones the high sugar levels won't kill you.

Stay strong, keep those ketones away and see your GP asap. 9 days isn't unknown for a period unfortunately (speaking from bitter experience) but it shouldn't be making you ill. Can't make any further comment without knowing your method of birth control, but in your position I'd be making an asap appointment with my GP and possibly googling to check whether there's some obscure complication of your birth control that could be making you ill.

Sorry all have been resting as requested.
I havent seen my own gp as of yet as I went to a&e and I saw a gp there they call it primary care now, they put you in categories for your injury/illness
I'm type 1 and have only been diagnosed since Christmas so I'm still learning about all this.
I dont have a diabetic nurse at the moment cause I was doing so well and really stable so they discharged me back to the care of my gp.
I was on the depo injection for 5 odd years but had to come off it due to the risk of brittle bones so I'm now on the continuous pill, but the gp at the hospital said it was 50/50 chance I'd bleed but my actual gp didnt tell me that.
My work that I do normal keeps my sugars stable cause the amount of running around I do but not even that worked this week.
No-one has advised me on the sick day advise either I've literally been left to work things out for myself.
I'm quiet poorly anyway as I have heart disease also and have sense neuropathy in my feet.
The only way i can describe how I'm feeling is I have been majorly beaten up.
My headache is soooooo bad I cant even explain and my whole body just hurts, my arms the most.
I've been given strong cocodamol and if things dont calm down advised to go back to hospital. Which I will see my gp instead.
They have prescribed me a free style libre now just awaiting that.
Just feel like I failed myself because I done so well doing this pretty much alone then my sugars were just out of control my basil wasnt bringing them down or anything I done.

The beauty of hormones. We women are soooo lucky... not.
Hugs from me. I truly know how hormones can mess up my health. I still get the upper hand occasionally. Mine goes in waves. Some is acceptance and some is battering those bgs down... any how.

@RoseShiel they could at least put this info on their info leaflets for you to hv known. I bet the hospital GP will be writing to yours.
I always read my leaflets but unless I'm on the same meds I can account for dizziness and coldness from one med and same from one of my health conditions then if another med added I can hv a melt down as palpitations really worry me. Chest pains too but been assured ok with mild heart disease. Oh its great fun. Not.
I always read the leaflets though and if in doubt speak to my chemist.
Sugar/protein in the urine can be treated but insulin does treat sugar. So most GPS are reassured if you hv a Diabetes Nurse.
I'd always go to a&e too if I thought I had Ketoacidosis.
Our hormones drive us crazy. Especially when not in sync.

Hello @RoseShiel ah bless you sound like your having a real rough ride at the moment. Well you do need a diabetic nurse, sorry to say it but GP’s are not diabetic specialists so your care needs to be upgraded - can you contact either your practice and ask to be referred to a diabetic nurse or contact your local hospital direct and ask to be referred. They can do many things to help like put you on courses to help educate you as well as help you with monitoring and adjusting your doses and changing insulin/meters to ensure your getting the right tools to manage your diabetes. We are all unique with our requirements so no one size fits all but your nurse will ensure your care meets your specific needs.

This totally isn't your fault. Hormones and illness are unfortunately very good at requiring much more insulin, and as insulin increases vary from person to person and sickness to sickness, there's nothing you can do but follow sick day rules, which you probably haven't been taught about yet.

With levels that high you really need to be able to contact someone for advice on insulin dosing - if your GP can't help (and there's a good chance they don't have the knowledge to give this sort of specialised T1 advice) don't hesitate to dial 111. Honestly I think you've been failed by your original hospital diabetic team, they should have given you a lot more help before abandoning you to a GP.
