Would hot chocolate hit the spot, the low cal versions aren't too bad. Alternatively you could blitz cocoa powder with cream and a few berries to make a friendlier smoothie/ milkshake. I didn't think I liked dark chocolate until this year but really enjoy it (in moderation) now. Good luck

Try 100% cocoa dark chocolate with no refined sugar and no milk, you'll only have a few carbs in a 100gram bar. Depends if you want to spend up to £5 a bar for pure dark choc, otherwise try a cadbury's smashables popping candy bar, that's about 100 carbs in it and a bucket load of insulin. My new preferred option is pure cocoa :)

Lindt do 99% in Waitrose today. All Lindt Excellence range is 2 for £3. The 99% only has 8 carbs per 100 gram bar. I haven't tried it yet but normally limit myself to 2 squares (20 grams) of the 90% which has 14 grams per 100 gram bar.

Try raw cocoa powder, close to no carbs in a teaspoon, in comparison to Dairy milk hot chocolate its so much better for you. When you drink the sugary version after pure cocoa it tastes extremely sweet. Depends if you want sugar or cocoa?

I ordered it via amazon, or you can go direct to The Raw Chocolate co. website, otherwise try Rainforest Foods. If you drink it raw with just hot water it's quite bitter, you can add milk and sugar to sweeten it but then you loose a lot of the antioxidant benefits.

I read that craving chocolate could indicate a magnesium deficiency, and actually when I took a supplement my cravings diminished so I guess for me that was the case. Chocolate is yummy though.

Is diabetic chocolate nice lol?
Im type 1 and to me diabetic chocolate tastes the way cardboard smells, its very expensive esp if you go to thorntons, a wee bit of normal chocolate every now and then will not hurt, just do it in moderation :) i have also found that one or two sugar free boiled sweets are sufficient enough to get rid of the few chocolate cravings i have, and it is very normal to crave chocolate after being told that you are not allowed it, but please remember to keep it in extreme moderation

Diabetes, people who think they know everything!
As a type 2 due to pancreatic damage, I've experimented with different chocolate, I eat the Thorntons diabetic chocolate if that's all I can get, but I love Hotel Chocolat Supermilk, which is a 70% chocolate so as good as some darks but with that little flavour of a milk chocolate - this range has just chocolate, or bars with hazelnuts or earl grey tea pieces in. They also go right up to 100% in their ranges - expensive, but exquisite.......and we're worth it - for a treat!!

hi, I have diabetes because of pancreatitus too.... I have a small amount of cadburys milk chocolate, sorry, not the entire bar anymore! But a heroes or a small kids sized one (say a freddo or slim dairy milk) doesnt affect my sugars as bad as a piece of fruit does - personally I would prefer the fruit.

I refuse to allow my life to be taken over by my diabetes nor restrict myself from what I want to eat. That sounds like I don't care, but diabetes is now just a part of my lifestyle and I have learned to choose my foods carefully to allow myself that small treat when I hit the point of no return where only chocolate will do.

As an idea, I have a sugar free lollipop or sugar free sweets on me at all times - just be careful with the sweeteners in them, too many made me ill!! But I like hardboiled sweets most as they are small but last longer and get you over the cravings.

I am meds and insulin controlled but its a matter of trial and error and finding what your body can and cannot cope with. I can (and when first diagnosed did in my denial stage) actually eat a massive chocolate bar and be ok, but if I eat an apple I am crippled with pancreatic pain - but moderating my bad food intake has helped me lose weight (though had no affect on my diabetes). Its a massive learning curve. As for sugar craving diminishing... not happened yet for me after 2 1/2 years, a better than halving in my hba1c and much lower (from 23-30 to 5-8) blood sugars that I maintain through the day.

I hate dark chocolate and diabetic chocolate plays havoc on my system - I would rather have a small amount of what I actually like than "treat" myself to something I don't enjoy. I tell my specialist nurse this and she tells me it is preferable to feeling resentful and ultimately gorging myself on rubbish... yes I have been there and done that too.

My diabetic nurse told me to check my sugars after I ate it, if I am over 9 and I eat it again she can read me the riot act, the only time I am over 9 these days is when I give into my cravings for fruit... a 100ml glass of juice put me 10 pts up (I trialled this to try to assist in my cholesterol management btw, not because I wanted it as I know juices are bad, seems the nurse in my doctors is not quite so bright).

Every diabetic is different and there are no set labels, no set treatment and no perfect advice. I would check bloods before and after, but have a small piece of what you want - how I reduced my chocolate intake was buy a bar but gave half away immediately upon opening it. I basically relied on my friends and family (and work mates) to help me out by taking that half away from me immediately.

I just started a new treatment so chocolate isnt even an option now, but good luck.
