Hi everyone,
I am so scared! For the last year my eyesight has got worse! Not diabetic related!
I have seen a specialist and he says that my eyes react normally to light! He can't see any problem!
I am now scared! My mum, gran, and my auntie's! All had glaucoma and catracts!
Okay firstly here are a few things that have happened!
My eyesight is blurred all the time now! BG never above 9 but this makes no difference to my eyesight!
I feel like my eyes are going to expolode as they have banging pain in them, i also get bad heads at the same time and also i have sickness at the same time! I have noticed that i have started to see what i think are halo's around lights!
I cannot stand bright lights! i have to wear sunglasses just to leave the house! I cannot cope with it being too dark as well!
I am so scared as this is worrying me now! My eyes feel so bad all the time now! It is almost like a thumping pain in my eyes!
i am under a specialist but he says that he cannot see anything! But my mum told me that they never picked up her glaucoma until it was too late god rest her soul! My gran went blind through glaucoma so did my auntie,
I can only see the top line of the eye chart with letters! I can also only see the lights close to my eyes on the field test that are close to me!
Sorry for the long text! Thank you for reading it!

Go to your GP or perhaps an Optician and tell him/her how scared you are.

Hi Sandy

Sorry to hear you are experiencing problems with your eyes.

You mentioned you had been to the place who did an eye test who had previously referred you to the hospital. Who actually saw you for this eye test? Have you had the pressure in your eyes taken at all?

Although we cannot diagnose on this forum your symptoms may & I stress may possibly be acute glaucoma– these symptoms can be very severe but not always constant.

My advice as it’s the weekend and GP’s not open would be to ring NHS Direct 0845 4647 for advice and/or go to Accident & Emergency.

Best wishes

Hi Sandy

Its sound as if you are being given the run around from services and being bounced from one to another.

No disrespect to Opticians but they are not Ophthalmologists (specialists in eye disorders).

If you are in pain and scared I think Accident & Emergency would be worth visiting. If you are scared and worried that is also not going to help your blood sugars and it’s a long time till Tuesday.

best wishes

Rude people! Not being able to do the things I want to do.
Sandy the test they need to do is this one,

An eye pressure test (tonometry)

An eye pressure test (tonometry) involves a small amount of anaesthetic and some dye being put onto your cornea (the clear front of the eye). A blue light from the head of the tonometer is held against your eye to measure the interocular pressure (IOP) in the eye. A tonometer is the instrument that is used to measure pressure within the eye.

I get this done every so often because I have uneven pressure in my eyes. It is usually done as a hospital out patient and is painless although I just hate anything touching my eyes!!

Me too Sandy but if it helps them find out what is wrong go for it!!!
I had the nurse holding me by the scruff of the neck so I would not jump backwards!!( I asked her to do this BTW!! :D )
It really is not that bad, it's just the thought that is worse! The Consultant I had was really good and gentle and I did not feel a thing.

The air puff thingy measures pressure.
Just to comfort you Sandy. The most nasty things don't usually hurt, which is why they are so bad. You don't get a warning.
Give Digby lots of cuddles, he'll make you feel less scared

Hi Sue,
It is more the case as a kid i had a patch over one eye and could only use my lazy eye! to help it work! I also had a squint in both eyes as a kid! Got lots of eye infections as a kid! Would wake up and my eyes were sealed had it all my childhood!
It scares me knowing that someone has to come close to my eyes!

Hi hanadr,
Digby does help giving him cuddles, His coat is so soft and he is always so warm! he is great he will put up with being fussed all day long!
Things to do with my eyes scare me!
with me i get all more scared at the waiting around! While waiting to go into the appointment!
But it has to be sorted this pain is getting real bad! My left eye is worse at minute!
Feels like it is going to explode out of my eye socket! i know it won't and head is banging!
eye sight has got so bad! I hate to admit this but i have to! I am thinking of getting a white stick for when i am out and about by myself! Best time now i can see only half a foot in front of me!
Blind as a bat i am! Well at least i know what to do for halloween dreess up as a bat! At least then i can get away with saying blind as a bat!..Lol,

If I were you, I'd go to nearest AandE ASAP. Seriously. Your sight is too precious to take risks with.

Hope you find it is something easily sorted.

BTW people who have a close relative with glaucoma can have free eye tests from age 40. My (non-diabetic) husband got free eye tests for years because his mother had glaucoma. He has not developed it himself, so far.

Sandy, the advice you have been given regarding the eye problem is very sound, however, I'm also concerend about your pain.

Did you mention the pain when you spoke to NHS Direct? Constant/regular pain is very difficult to bear. You need some medical advice on brining it under control as soon as possible, so I'd suggest a trip to A&E or your local walk in centre would be a very good idea.

Hi Sandy

It all sounds awful, I am wondering if migraine has been ruled out? my husband is not diabetic but he gets cluster headaches and migrainal neuralgia on top of the "normal" migraines, especially in cold weather. His whole face/neck head hurts. Most typically he has eye pain (stabbing)and blurred vision and the disturbances create an auora. these are either zigg zaggy lights, loss of peripharal vision and halos, all colours like a rainbow.

He saw a neurologist to rule out any other causes because trapped nerves in the neck etc can cause eye probs.

I would ask your GP about this if I were you. Don't know if that helps.

I had the puffer thing and the machine that touches your eye surfaces done last week because I have a little pressure behind one eye and there is glaucoma and cataract history in my family, it was fine, it really was, they put an anaesthetic drop in the eye first and I didn't feel anything and there were no after effects.

Hope you feel better soon. :)

Hi Chrissie,
I suffer with cluster migraines from a young age!
Thing is this pain is different! It is like at times hot pins in my eyes! Then there is like a thumping in the eyes! And also behind the eyes!
I have seen aneroligist! Thing is as the specilist says with all the family history of sight loss!
All women have lost sight to one thing or another!
I have always had bad short sight! But now i don't have any distance vision what so ever!
It scares me as i have always relied on my long sight! Now i am lucky if i can see a foot away!
My friend says that she has called out to me accross the street! I have heard her but not seen her! That scares me!
I have appointment for tuesday with eye clinic! i am thinking of getting onto GP on monday and she what she can do! This pain is so bad tonight! I feel like left eye going to explode! I hope not it would make such a mess!

Hi Broxie bear!
I write my messages in word! Then shrink them down and paste into here! As i don't want everybody to have to look at font 38 as that is big writting and that would be unfair on everyone to try and read!
I usually try to not write too big as other people eyes can get hurt from the writting!

It really does sound like migraine to me, which would explain why the experts can't find anything physically wrong when performing their tests.

There are many different types of migraine and different triggers so it's entirely possible it's that, even though they aren't as you experienced before with a migraine.

The lights/halo, the nausea, the pain and sensitivity to light, all classic symptoms.

We have a specialist eye hospital here, do you have anything similar where you live? I see you had an appt yesterday? How did that go?
