Hello to everyone & thanks for the all the information & the optimism I'm starting to feel after quite a few hours of reading through the boards.

I'm - as far as I know- type 2. Still trying to get a straightforward & sensible diagnosis with no mistakes, errors & mix-ups with blood & urine samples. After being told by an optician that I needed to sign up with a gp as a matter of urgency, I did that, & I've slipped over into Alice land. Believe me, curiouser & curiouser doesn't do it justice. That's flippant, I'm actually very scared, bewildered & very very angry.

I was on the verge of paying to see an eye specialist until I was told any hospital referral couldn't be for NHS treatment, I'd need a NHS GP for that. I'm changing GP & hoping it's third time lucky.

In the meantime I've bought a bg monitor, testing strips & bathroom scales & I've started eating the low carb. diet. Oh, goodness, I will miss good bread & rice, the only way for me to manage that is to cut them out completely. I'm also fond of pastry, & early this morning my mind turned to fluffy light dumplings......

Hi esmedarling,

Welcome to the forum.Looks like you have already made a good start by buying a meter, bathroom scales and cutting down on carbs.

I'm still relatively new to having diabetes myself but have managed to give up rice and bread, pasta and potatoes and don't really miss them at all. I have lost weight and reduced my bs numbers and there are still lots of good things to eat.

Continue to have a read of the posts and ask any questions - there is a lot of knowledge, help and support on this forum.

People who are touchy.......feign indignation at the slightest thing. Hypocrites, bullies and cowards.
Hi esme.
Welcome to the forum. RP has said it all.

As for 'fluffy light dumplings'......I think about them all the time..... :( I can manage one or two small ones if my Bg is very low to start with and I look out for the 3 hr readings. Test.

Thanks for the welcomes, I probably won't post much but I'll be reading & learning all the time. I've just told one of my sons he's going to be the recipient of a six week old bread making machine & a large ammount of various flours. I think I'm going to be sharing out more than half the contents of the pantry as well. Suddenly all those good wholesome supplies have grown horns & prickles. I'm lucky though, I really do love salad stuffs & green vegetables.
Esme.

Hi esmedarling,

It sounds as though you have got onto the right track from the very beginning. That should stand you in very good stead in the long term.

It took me eight years to get to that stage!

Best wishes - John

Hi John, unfortunately this is not the very beginning. The first diagnosis was made years ago. Lost medical records, dismissive doctors, episodes of being -& looking- super fit, other episodes of being hugely fat & semi-stupefied. Far too many doctors, just like lay people, rely on their first visual impression. I was either simply far too fat or I looked perfectly fit & healthy.

To be honest, if it hadn't been for the rapid deterioration in my sight I wouldn't have gone near a gp again. The practice I just signed up with has already made a hash of things, & despite faxes & phone calls from my optician they have no intention of referring me to an eye specialist.
A phone message from one of the gp's told me that she'd looked at my recent medical notes & there was nothing in them about my eyesight so I didn't need to see a gp, just attend the diabetic clinic "as usual"

As USUAL ??? I've only just had 'their' first hospital test results back. & my RECENT medical notes? Whose notes are they looking at? I certainly have no recent notes, I've not seen a doctor for years & years.
I think this oddness may a local thing, I did try another surgery before this one & as soon as I spoke to the receptionist on the phone she interrupted me & told me I was not going to get any sleeping tablets & why didn't I just go & buy a packet of paracetamol.

I'm not angry because I'm diabetic, I'm very angry about the local NHS workers & that I've somehow copped for the particularly alarming ones.

I think this moan may be in the wrong place. Esme.
