You are stating that T2 is caused mostly by weight gain (as in subcutaneous fat).
Wrong. The reality is explained all over the forum, so I don't think it is necessary to explain it again here.

As for your comment on alcoholism - weird. Perhaps you are confusing NAFLD with AFLD. Trust me when I say that is almost as irritating as a T1 finds it when they are confused with a fat T2.

So, another judgemental and misinformed post then.

This website explains how alcohol can make some people develop insulin resistance leading to the diagnosis of type 2.
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/255716.php

I have watched 3 relatives develop type 2 through drinking alcohol every week in large quantities and one has now died from end stage liver disease, the other 2 are taking oral medication to control the bg along with other med.

I also became great friends with a type 2 diabetic who was very overweight/obese and was so insulin resistant that huge doses of insulin by injection was needed and even that didnt work so U500 was obtained through special funding and I helped getting/support with a specialist for an insulin pump. My friend was diagnosed with NAFLD, a scared liver, huge rises in the CA19 and CA125 tumour markers in the bloodstream and a whole host of other serious medical problems affecting every organ more or less in the body from head to foot along with a leg ulcer - gangrene, retinopathy, neuropathy, incontinence. She needed a new body and her head transplanted on to it. The tumour markers revealed the possibilty of islet cancer. She died a few years ago leaving me devastated as I tried to deal with the financial mess she left because she had no family that wanted to take responsibilty.

@iHs I feel for you that you have been through all of that with these people.

There would have been reasons why your friend was obese. It's a pity the medical profession didn't help her find out the reasons and help her address them. Simply telling someone to lose weight is not good enough, if they could they would. No-one wants to be obese. The same with heavy drinkers. Understanding is what is needed from the medical profession and from the public in general. Criticism just makes the problem worse.

Thank you (from another seriously obese T2) for doing what you could to help your friend. As for me, I am looking into complementary medicine (again) to help myself try to lose weight as I really do not know what else to do or where else to look for the answer.

It would be helpful if manufacturers would reduce the sugar levels in food. They do not have to put as much sugar in their products. The conflicting information that you get is not helpful at all.

People that can't listen to other people's opinions.
People that can't say sorry.
Moving on from this slightly.... We've iplayerd 4 of the 5 episodes made with Gloria Hunniford and they have all been well worth watching.

Also wish the BBC could have put them on in the evenings.

It's such a shame the BBC have blotted their copybook by making a joke on Eastenders about kids not having a good party unless they get diabetes from all the sweets. Idiots.

Eastenders is a drama, about people. And people do say daft, politically incorrect things, un-troubled by factual accuracy. Whilst we, as diabetics, might find such a comment to be rather crass and in poor taste, should characters in soaps only say things that toe the BBC official factually-sound line. Because actual people don't and it is a dramatisation after all. I'd be far more troubled if it was presented as a fact on Panorama or Horizon.

I agree.. The character that said this will "fall down some apples & pears" or "walk into a door" 9 months down the line in the plotline..... Or in court on a murder trial???!!;)

I find it in poor taste, inappropriate, factually incorrect and not in the slightest bit funny. I don't care if the character is an idiot who comes out with stupid things all the time the writers have put this in for exactly the reaction they have got and to boost ratings. I pay £145 odd a year for the BBC to come up with drivel like this and as a company who is here purely on the power of the license payers money they have a responsibility to the license payer to be responsible and not make up any old thing to try sensationalise and improve ratings. It's disgusting.

I didn't watch it supergirthuk, never watch Eastenders now," but kids not having a good party unless they get diabetes from all the sweets" a no, no. It's great to 'inject' a little humour into programmes, but I feel, that it's crossing the line and in poor taste. So come on script writers, at least try to do a thorough search regarding medical conditions and stop and think first about some of the crass script lines that come out of actors mouths. Moan over now,

I would say they have a responsibility to be as factually correct as they can rather than perpetuate the general ignorance on matters and to not sensationalise in a poor attempt to boost ratings.

These programs have a huge public following and voice and whether it be a drama, a comedy or even the news the fact is that they should not spread ignorance that in this case could and should have been easily be avoided.

In 1989, the British soap Eastenders aired the first gay kiss on British television, prompting one British newspaper to run the headline "Filth! Get This Off Our Screens". Actor Michael Cashman received a brick through his window.

"On the second kiss there was barely any fuss. By the third kiss barely anyone noticed," Cashman wrote in The Mirror newspaper.

The BBC fully understand the ability of soaps to alter public attitudes and there usefulness in social engineering .

Yes, I remember that, but as I said previously I don't watch Eastenders anymore and haven't done so for years.

Seeing as this is themselves admitting they know they have the power to change people's perceptions on things makes it all the more infuriating that they use it so irresponsibly.

Yes that may be so but it still affects you as it can colour the attitudes of those around you who do watch it.

This post has been reported several times.
I am letting it stand as members are expressing their views on it and it may serve the purpose of letting people who are uneducated about Type2 rethink their views.

I think the thread shows that diabetes isn't a one size fits all condition .
Having been a "controlled" diabetic for s while now I know what works for me , others will find what works for them.
I for one am glad you have let this thread stand.

I have a BMI of 24.3 but my waist is 6cm in the red zone of the diabetes tape. So now I'm working on reducing that, this is helping me keep control .
