Hi, I had a discussion on sunday with a lady I know and my brother, the lady has a husband who is t2 and she trotted out the old one about it will always get worse because it`s degenerative and my brother compounded it by insisting that t2 almost always turns into t1. I did try and explain why it doesn`t have to degenerate and that it can`t turn into t1 but have to admit I was left feeling very alone.

The misinformation gets tiring, doesn't it?

Type 1 and Type 2 are different. Different causes. Different patterns.
Somewhat different treatment.

A T2 who starts using insulin is an 'insulin dependent T2' and will always be so.
They do not turn into a T1.

The whole 'T2 is inevitably degenerative' thing is a lot more debatable.

My own view is that degeneration happens to all of us, with age, and my liver and pancreas are going to go the same way. Having said that, one sure way to accelerate that degeneration is to follow the standard advice to eat lots of carbs, because the more you strain your body to cope with glucose variations and encourage insulin resistance, the quicker bits of you will wear out!

@chri5 I find that sometimes it is possible to explain, sometimes not, it depends on how receptive people are to new ideas. I found the same thing applied when trying to explain our son's Autism, people generally know more about it now but almost 30yrs ago the most frequent remark made to me was "he'll be really brilliant at maths and drawing then" It depends on how much you want the particular person to understand your diabetes whether or not you decide to explain or just leave it be. Good luck either way :)

I think it's always worth providing access to good information and then letting people make their own minds up. If you see the person again, you could say something like this: 'Type 2 diabetes does not have to be degenerative. It takes work but some type 2s maintain normal blood sugars and even come off of their medication. If you are interested, have a look at the book Diabetes 101 by Jenny Ruhl. Worst case scenario, you find nothing useful there and you've lost a couple of hours of your life. On the other hand, it could completely change your outlook on diabetes and bring long life and good health.'

Unfortunately though, many people are much happier being spoon fed sensational or ignorant misinformation by the media - a good story can be so much more interesting than plain boring facts...:D

As they say, you can bring a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

It is not surprising given that 98.5% still fail to achieve normal blood insulin/glucose levels after "intensive lifestyle intervention". But you will find a number of the 1.5% in this forum because we don't follow their intensive lifestyle intervention protocol.

Intervention
Details of the intervention have been described previously.10- 12 In short, the ILI included weekly group and individual counseling in the first 6 months, followed by 3 sessions per month for the second 6 months and twice-monthly contact and regular refresher group series and campaigns in years 2 to 4. The ILI aimed to reduce total caloric intake to 1200 to 1800 kcal/d through reductions in total and saturated fat intake and by increasing physical activity levels to a goal of 175 min/wk. Liquid meal replacements were provided to assist dietary goals. Participants in the DSE were offered 3 group sessions each year focusing on diet, physical activity, and social support. Medical care was provided by the participant's physician independent of the Look AHEAD study. During periods of weight loss, ILI participants who were taking insulin, sulfonylureas, repaglinide, or nateglinide were asked to provide blood glucose measurement records so that Look AHEAD medical staff could determine if reductions in diabetes medications were needed to reduce their risk of hypoglycemia.

Complete remission was defined as transition from diabetes criteria to full normalization of glucose (fasting plasma glucose level <100 mg/dL and HbA1c <5.7%) with no antihyperglycemic medication.

you mean you can't catch diabetes by standing next to someone with it?
No, only by watching too much porn @tim2000s ;-)

(for those that weren't at PWDC16, there is actually a question on Yahoo Answers about this - "does God give you diabetes as a punishment for watching porn?"!!!)
