T2's Out of Interest How did your Diagnosis Come About?

Just interested to see how others received the diagnosis, did you go to the GP as you were feeling unwell? Did you receive your diagnosis by another means.

For myself at the time I had no idea at all that something was wrong until i realised that the glasses I had been using to work on the Ipad no longer worked and without them the screen was a total blur...this happened quite suddenly over a couple of days.

I called my optician and there had been such a shift in my prescription that she gave me a letter to give to the GP to arrange a full blood count and the rest as they say is history.

Very grateful to this very on the ball young lady!

I am back to visit her again this week as the prescription she gave me for driving is now far too strong (actually I feel that I can see better wihtout any glasses for distance but want this confirmed before I gaily stop wearing them for driving!) As for reading and computer I am back in an old pair of glasses that I was wearing 10 years ago!

I had been suffering some of the classic symtoms for a few months in the New Year (last year). At first I thought "prostate", but then started thinking Diabetes.

I had my annual Hypertension check up in March last year, and asked if the blood test had shown anything. The nurse said that they hadn't tested for diabetes, so she took another sample.

I got a letter asking me to make an "urgent" appointment, and the GP gave me the good news.

In the interim I had already found this site and forum, and I had already decided the course of action I needed to follow, so I left the NHS Diet sheets he gave me in the waiting room.

Purely by chance. My partner was feeling rough over Christmas so our pharmacist gave him some Diastix to test the sugar in his urine. He was fine, nice green reading - "let me have a go" I said (don't ask why!) - straight to dark brown :(

I had been feeling tired but nothing that would have sent me straight to the Docs as this did - diagnosed one week later, then the road to my new life started .... :)

I already had a pretty good idea as my dad was t2 so I knew the signs, I went in to a Lloyds pharmacy and they did a bg test. The woman testing shook her head and tested again then disappeared for a few mins so I guessed it wasn`t good news, when she came back she told me to go straight to my GP ( no appointment necessary as she had arranged an open one) apparently I had tested somewhere in the high twenties and my first hba1c was 24 so that was pretty unequivocal, no mucking about with prediabetes for me ;).

I have a yearly blood test as I am over 60, and also have hyperthyroidism. I had my last annual blood test in August, and got a letter from surgery a week later saying to make an appointment to see GP to get results, but that it wasn't urgent. The earliest appointment they could give me when I phoned was 3 weeks later.
I went along expecting it to be just the usual report that my thyroid levels were ok with the 100mcgs of levothyroxene daily. Only to be told that I was now diabetic.

My story is long and a battle.

It's now nearly sixteen years since the start of being symptomatic with diabetic symptoms.

My doctor simply included a HbA1c test in a regular annual blood test as my father and brother have diabetes. I had, and still have, no symptoms.

I happened to tell my neurologist that I was loosing sensation in feet and hands he then whipped out a needle with which he proceeded to stab me saying the old neurologist mantra of can you feel that? well how about this? then when he had repeated that several times he said yes you are loosing sensation in your feet and hands.

He then ordered some blood tests and low and behold they confirmed insulin resistance or impaired glucose intolerance with a HbA1c of 54 and sent a letter to my then GP informing him of the results.

My then GP insisted the results where perfectly normal and ignored them.

18 months later I had another HbA1c again ordered by neurologist which was then 64. Again ignored.

Last December had first appointment with new doctor at new surgery who immediately did finger prick test said oh dear that's a bit high not giving the specific reading, I said well does that mean I'm diabetic? and he said well you where last January so yes and put me on metformin.

He did add I'm sorry but we seem to have missed the boat here a little.

That's the gist of it.

Edit to add some of the names times dates places or what have you have been altered to protect the guilty

I had to argue with my GP to get the proper tests done. I knew my BG was higher than it should be as I had bought a meter and got readings of 12-14 after (comparably) carb heavy meals. HbA1c was 46 and eventually I got to do the OGTT that clearly showed diabetes. I think I caught it fairly early though but then I've kept a close check on BG all my adult life, due to heavy genetic diabetes inheritance. I still had terrible pains in my toes after about half a year on LCHF, then I got most of my sense of feeling back.

My doctor said to me when I had taken my wife for some tests we haven't checked your blood for a long time so have a test when you take the wife for hers. The day after the test got a phone call to go and have another test and the rest is history

Hi
4yrs ago I had cellulitis in my leg I was admitted to hospital because I developed sepsis I was quite ill my consultant put me on a powerful antibiotic, he asked me if I was diabetic, I told him no . They didn't test me !!
I felt tired a lot I had blurred vision off and on for 4-5 yrs I had blood tests and a gtt many years ago and told glucose intolerance didn't say I was diabetic, so went about my daily life feeling rough a lot of the time.
Anyway last November my asthma was playing up had to go to gp he was new to practice sent me for blood test bg 8.5 then I had the hba1c 53. He told I had diabetes!!
Suprise I saw nurse and started the process that we all go through, but I had already joined the forum very tentatively but have found it very supportive, I am so glad that a new gp came to my surgery. (Gosh I haven't said my story to anyone besides my kids it feels good to share) Thanks

Endocrinologist includes HbA1c and FBG during thyroid control every 6 months. HbA1c never higher than 5.9%% FBG higher end of normal however, I managed to lower everything out of the grey zone and into the normal zone. OGTT arranged but only Insulin abnormally high, insulin resistance diagnosed, commenced on off label use of Metformin 500mgs TID.
Repeat OGTT 6 months later confirmed diabetes due to surge response following drinking the syrup but HbA1c 5.7% and FBG remained within normal range. Referred to diabetic specialist clinic because I suffer from an array of complex illnesses. Peripheral blood testing pre and post (2 hrs) breakfast revealed mostly normal values, one slightly hyper reading 157mg/dl (8.75 mmols|L) and two not so low hypo readings of 84 (4.7) and 75 (4.15). With these values, I struggle to believe the T2 DM diagnoses but peripheral neuropathy in bothh feet cannot be ignored.

Very strong family history of diabetes - every descendant of my maternal grandfather my age or older. With that history, my doctor was doing annual tests, since we knew it was coming. I tipped over into diabetes in October.

I woke up one night with tingling all over my body.. felt decidedly odd so on hubby's insistence went to see the doc a couple of days later. Was then called by practice to have a visitation with the Diabetes Nurse so wasn't exactly a surprise when I was diagnosed...

Well done, your on a role with a positive attitude and doing great. I know how hard it is to lose weight, I have been trying hard for more than a year now but have only managed to shift 7kg. juggling hypothyroidism and diabetes is not easy, I set myself realistic targets like moving from stage 2 obesity to stage 1 obesity (achieved today) and then too be fat. I find this a much better way rather than focusing on kgs. Reducing the BMI for me equates with getting healthier. Whatever your method is, it seems to be working and doing the trick, keep up the good work
