Hi folks!

Was having a rubbish day requiring either a LOT of chocolate, or some red wine, or both. Given that it was only 2.30pm, red wine wasn't really practical, and chocolate wasn't going to get a look-in today as I didn't want to wreck today's already dodgy numbers.

So, off I went to the gym to burn off some out-of-sorts-ness. Took both gym gear AND swimming togs - and after 30 minutes on the treadmill, a quick change AND 30 lengths, I found I was feeling SO MUCH BETTER. That's the first time I've done treadmill and pool in one session, and I'm really pleased!

This regular exercise lark makes such a difference on so many levels!

30 lengths of the pool this morning.

Bit frustrated - ran on 3 days last week - flat treadmill, straight line, not too fast, proper shoes that fit and support my feet - no problems.

Felt fine after Saturday morning's run, had a good stretch. Had a lovely walk Sunday morning, wearing my decent walking boots, no problem.

Then I did two hours of ironing last night - and my feel started to hurt in exactly the same places as when I injured them recently when I started running - which was on uneven, cambered road edges and pavements, and in shoes that weren't good enough.

Firstly I obviously need to give up ironing - but is my new running hobby already DOOMED?!

I hate to think I may have broken my feet AGAIN just when I'm loving, loving, loving running!

Sorry, this should really be on the Scream thread! Thanks for listening, fellow moderate exercisers! Might swim again tomorrow instead of the treadmill...
You need expert advice from someone who knows. Specialist physio? Sports physio? Don't mess around with people who don't have experience of this.

Is maybe your posture to blame?

Very best of luck.

Thanks @LucySW - as I'm a beginner I'm trying to ask loads of questions and getting advice, and yes, I think it's a postural thing. I'm taking more time to warm up, which certainly helped this morning - and I think that the hours of standing ironing on a hard floor didn't count as 'rest' for my feet.

Yesterday I didn't go to the gym but had a long, busy and physical day on a job with my husband - coming home via the BIKE SHOP as a surprise! That's birthday and Christmas (not just this year!) sorted...........

Today I've been on the treadmill - I've devised this little sequence for myself, and it's challenging but doable:

5 mins walk (6.5 km/h)
5 mins run (9.5 km/h)
2 mins walk (6.5)
5 mins run (10)
3 mins walk 6.5)
5 mins run (10.5)
5 mins walk (6.5)
STRETCHED!

Then 10 lengths of the pool - it was too packed to cope with, and I did it all doggy paddle rather than alternating with sculling backstroke as I would have caused collisions and pool rage!

I feel fab! Glad I'm not due at work until 10 as am feeling a little tired after all that.

Have a great day, all!

:)

PS Why did I wait until I was 40....?!

My God. I feel tired just reading that.

In my case - I train very hard for short bursts as well - it's 57 !

LOL @LucySW - I'm an 'all or nothing' type - I'm going through an 'all' phase at the moment, that's all. I am more than able to offer plenty of 'nothing' - it's a matter of time!

Last spring, aged a little over 40, I decided to get fit. Since going on my pump last year though, and to mark my 30 year 'jubilee' next month, I've started taking the fit thing more seriously.

I love this thread because it gives me accountability on the occasions I don't want to get up and go!

Yes, I find it gives me solidarity. I live the hard exercise I get and it makes me feel so good - positive and optimistic, as if things are going to be all right after all.

I'm not particularly good at doing it at the weekend though, because the weekends are anti-routine. Perhaps they shouldn't be.

I know what you mean, @LucySW - for a start it's so much harder to get out of bed at the weekend! I find that the pool tends to be busier and more 'social' than 'fitness' orientated at weekends and there's a different crowd and a different vibe.

I was looking forward to a bike ride this weekend but a) my schedule seems to have been slightly hijacked with non-exercise-related family commitments and b) my existing bike has failed me completely and I'm not picking up its replacement until next week!

I think that makes Sunday a 'rest day' on that basis!

Does chopping off the top half of a 10 foot tall Leylandii tree count as moderate exercise? Certainly sawing through the two thicker bits were hard work! Now it's down to my height it will be easier to keep under control. I did the 2 mile walk to the supermarket before lunch, and mowed the grass (lawn is too grandiose a term) after.

It certainly all helped with a pre-supper reading of 4.9 after a FBS of 9.3 this morning.

Busy weekend for me - treadmill then 20 lengths yesterday, followed by a whirlwind day of chores including the long-overdue first lawn cut of the year.

No gym today but did manage another lovely walk through a local bluebell walk this afternoon!

Just had a look back through my diary - this week at the gym I've swum 2.4km and run 4.5km. I'm ever so proud of myself - and at the same time am put to shame by watching the highlights of the London marathon - what a phenomenal achievement by so many people, and with so many raising so much for such good causes.

:)

So I guess it's normal, to have times of good exercise and no exercise. I am really struggling to do it at the moment, and it is very frustrating and a bit scary.

I wish there was a way to figure this out.

Have been lazy lately but went for a woodland walk today that gave me a lovely 4.7 afterwards.

30 lengths this morning.

Am thinking about checking out the local running club as I'd like to learn how to run outside (rather than on the treadmill) without killing my feet. Very nervous about it, though... My local club meets at the leisure centre in the nearest town, and they have a beginners' group on a Thursday evening. Am trying to pluck up the courage to e-mail them about going along this Thursday...

Morning all,

Treadmill yesterday, pool today - it was packed in there this morning! Luckily I got one of the edges (vital for backstroke navigation on alternate lengths!) but it was soooooo choppy as there were 10 of us splashing up and down.

Began to feel intimidated and squashed up against the wall thanks to some pool etiquette issues, so thought I'd get out after 20 lengths and admit defeat - but then thought 'naaaaaah, I'll keep my line and just keep going' - so I did!

Proud of myself for doing 30 lengths, but even prouder to have had the confidence to just going despite others trying to muscle in on my space! Confidence isn't really my thing. There was room for all of us - it was just more of a challenge than normal. And just because I'm the one steadily doggy paddling doesn't mean that I deserve to be pushed out of the way by people in dark goggles who have an impressive front crawl!

Have a great day, all! Have got an appointment with my pump group at the diabetes centre this afternoon - am feeling very positive about it.

Onwards!
