Hi Carol,

Yes it would! In order to maintain good control and to establish what effects foods have on your diabetes control, i.e what effect it has on blood glucose, it is essential that you test.

The amount of times that you test is entirely up to you, but it may be in your interest to test regularly at first to establish what control you have at present. When you establish good control, it is then personal choice.

I have just started testing after being diagnosed type 2 in Nov 2009 - i felt i needed to know how my treatment was progressing and i also want to take control of my situation-asked GP for testing equipment , no was the reply so i have bought the test meter and strips from the local pharmacy - then i found this site and all the fab information
If you are to buy your own meter ans are registered as diabetic and receive free prescriptions make sure that you get VAT exemption on your purchases - lots of info on this site + a VAT exemption form also tips on buying test strips from ebay and on line pharmacies - i paid £24.50 for 50 strips in my village chemist and have found them for £14.50 for 50 on the web.

Have been testing for 3 consecutive days, so far , making discoveries about the food i eat - also I'm going to take the results with me to my next GP appointment as I am not yet controlled - hope the results will help her to see where we are going !!!

I'm one of the people ho is only allowed 2 packs of strips a year free, but I buy from Abbott Diabetes Care. their price and service is brilliant £14.?? and free postage. that's better even than most eBay sellers. I have used eBay and was disgusted to find that I received 2 packs with pharmacy labels torn off. they had been prescribed for someone who sold them. That's illegal as well as immoral. So I went to Abbott and recommend their service. Orders come first class post.

do you happen to have the URL for the Abbott shop.

I am very lucky that my doctor does prescribe strips, but I am also very careful, and tend to order 1 lot of 50 per month, and then also buy one on line. This way I hope he will not turn round and say that he wont prescribe them any more.

I have been buying on ebay, and make sure that I only get them when they are cheap, but if Abbot provide a good service I would much rather buy legitimate ones as I am sure a high % of the ones on line are from people who are selling their prescriptions - which means they are probably NOT controlling their levels properly.

Carol,
I think self-testing is a great idea. I only began to feel in control of my diabetes when I started self-testing. For the first few months I did it several times a day, now a bit less and occasional days not at all. Knowledge is a good thing, where this condition of ours is concerned.

just Google for Abbott. You will find their phone number on the website. If you contact them, they can put you on their system. They provide the Freestyle Lite meter and a couple of others. I have the Freestyle Lite. If you order over the phone before 4:00pm, the order goes out that day.( First class post.) It only took my pre Christmas order 3 days to get to me. They are so helpful

Hi Folks,

I have been diagnosed a whole 4 days now, so accept please that I am no expert

I would suggest that you should first try through the Specialist Nurse at the diabetes clinic
It may be that you can sweet talk the nurse into a couple of weeks supply, and if this is the case, do make a real effort at properly charting BS levels, times, food intake and exercise etc, in order to demonstrate that you are really genuine about this. When you bring your chart back to her, discuss how you have gone on and ask her advice about how you might improve. Also tell her you are going to ask the consultant to write to the GP. If she is a nice as the Lass I saw on Friday, she will go in to the consultant and arrange this all for you.
Once you have 'Sister' on your side, you can move mountains :D

When you see the consultant, the you should discuss your need to learn more about how different foods and exercise affect your levels, and state your aim to gain greater control over your situation. Explain that the GP has been unhelpful in this regard and ask if she/he could write to your Doctor recommending that you be prescribed test strips, and why, and also ask for this letter to be copied to you.

If the GP is still blocking you, ask him for a letter stating his reasons for this, and then write to the primary health care trust and ask them for a ruling or intervention.

I have learned by hard experience in my other health issues, that sometimes a little crafty manipulation is needed, even to bring about a common sense result.

I was at the Clinic for the first time last Friday and have not 1. but 2 meters and a small supply of stabbers and test strips to last the weekend. The clinic faxed through the details & make required while I was still there and my surgery ordered them straight away. I collect on Monday morning.

Sadly the NHS is a real postcode lottery. I do appreciate that I am so lucky in that, from my first test to getting geared up took 2 days .
I appreciate having the meter just now as my levels are high ... bs 25.1 last night and 17.4 before eating this morning :?

Keep pressing for the reversal of your GPs unfair and just plain daft decision, and just perhaps, things will be that much easier for the next poor soul coming in through the GP's door.

Get wise & be lucky

Dave

ps, I'm looking forward to having a reading as low as 14.4 .... early days :D

Hi everyone. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question about checking my blood sugar. It is very much appreciated. Since asking this question I won a bayer meter and have been testing my blood. The lowest is 6. 7 and the highest has been 22.2 after lunch. I know these readings are high but I dont like to tell my GP that I have a meter because he told me not to bother getting a meter because he wouldnt prescribe the strips etc. I have been taken off Metformin since June and maybe this is why my blood glucose is high. I dont know weather I need to be started on further medication. I think my next appointment will be in October.
