Sounds like "fat fighters club" on Little Britain..?
I'm on one at the moment (X-pert) and I'm sorely tempted to answer each question with the word 'dust'. We also have an Indian lady with a rather strong accent! Otherwise, generally positive! I'll start a new thread!

I attended a DESMOND course in January and was told to eat pasta rice biscuits etc and was also told there was no need to test unless on insulin. No wonder there's so much confusion!

Hi. I'm not sure of your situation to allow me to offer specific advice, but I am wondering if you have or can purchase a self-testing meter and strips. Checking your blood sugar level before and about 2.5 hours after eating will let you know a great deal, and can also let you know that you are doing well. it is very natural to be down about it all until you get informed and see the levels drop as you get in control. Look on the site at how many of us have managed to really get things down to manageable levels - you can certainly do that too. So - stop the negative feeling and change it to a determined one...get in control of your blood sugar by recording what you eat and by checking the readings. GET A METER. Good luck.

Why are you depressed when you seem to have the formula right? It took me years to find that formula Now make the forumla routine so you don't have to think about it

I understand that even when you've grasped a sensible course of action, the overwhelm caused by a diagnosis can be very traumatic.

Give yourself time, be kind to yourself and stick with your plan:)

Well, 30 mins ago, I came away from the first of a 2-part course on diabetes education. I didn't go out of some masochistic mechanism but because I was referred by my doctor and DN. Blimey ... what a travesty.

Over three hours I was encouraged to eat plenty of rice, potato and pasta, told bread was good for me and that there was no need to avoid sugary beans or sweet and sour sauces. Moreover, occasional sweets biscuits are fine, but fats and sweeteners should be avoided (as the latter give you diarrhoea). Oh, and there is absolutely no need to use a BG monitor unless I am taking insulin.

Tragically, the other ten diabetics in the room were lapping it up. Many of the questions included things like "can I still have biscuits/ Mars bars/ milk chocolate etc". In response, the dietician trawled out suggestions of eating healthy and everything in moderation. So, go for it guys and chomp on your rich tea and ginger nuts!!!!

If I was to follow that advice, my HbA1c in three months would be in the 80s (at least) and I would be on a sure track to be taking a wheelbarrow full of meds!

This morning as a result of a largely LCHF diet my fasting BG was 5.2. On top of that none of my test results have been over 7.3 for the last week and most average around 5.5. So, who is right? Is it me with the hard data to support continuation of my diet/ lifestyle, or a bunch of ill-advised, dogmatic HCPs who appear unable to see the wood from the trees?

The bottom line is tragic - their misinformation is destroying the future lives of help-seeking diabetics. Those professionals should feel ashamed!
We need to question why this totally false info is presented to us diabetics!
The only answer that seems to fit the circumstances is MONEY! If the presenter gave good ad godly information to the diabetics, the diabetics would be in control of their diabetes. The needed information is:
Carbs need to be no more than 20 grams a day!
Healthy foods need to be eaten three times daily with 4 hours between meals for digestion!
Healthy foods include: Low glycemic index, organic, fresh, raw or lightly steamed vegetables like kale, bok choy, celery, long carrots, romaine lettuce, and fruit juice smoothies like acai, goji mangosteen, and noni and nuts and seeds like walnuts, almonds,

Sorry you had such a poor experience:(

I had my DESMOND course a few weeks ago and it was significantly better, though far from perfect.

Here's the link of the feed back summary I provided for the community:)

"OK folks...I got through to the other side, mind and body in tact:)

Surprisingly it was more positive than I expected, which is not to say it did not have its challenges.

1. 6 hours of team teaching with two specialist NHS educators (both ladies).

2. Emphasis throughout on getting us thinking, responding to lots and lots of questions

3. Several team (group of 10) test tasks getting us to think together.

4. Thankfully no Eat Well Plate or the Pyramid. Thank the Lord:)

5. Fairly big emphasis on carbs being the root of the T2 problem and how important it is to limit and restrict these to limit insulin resistance. Not bad ... They would not support LCHF, but I was comfortable with what seemed to be a modified position following the recent NOF, PHC etc... Of which they were both aware.

6. OK on blood testing if Doc prescribes, but more emphasis on 3 monthly HbA1C as being the gold standard and essential as a regular test.

7. Cholesterol instruction ok, broke down and explained each component, but poor emphasis on LDL... No idea about Subfraction Profile.

8. Fats: worst part of the day, totally towed the party line on Saturated Fats being the "demon from Hell"...haha:) I graciously raised research and recent media and was backed up by an observing DN, but she was slapped down...so no wins on this:)

So overall, not a waste of time, reasonably interesting, certainly an improvement from what I've heard of the usual DESMOND format, but some way to go on cholesterol and especially saturated fat.

Tired now:)!"

Unfortunately, it's not as simple as a one size fits all diet: diabetes is a very personal disease and people need to find a diet that works for them and their personal situation: for an extreme example, I'm very, very allergic to walnuts and almonds and if I followed your advice, I could be dead within 24 hours! I also eat little and often so I can get the calories I need to maintain my weight (I have a BMI < 21 so can't really afford to lose much more!) without spiking my blood so your 3 meals a day wouldn't work for me either

This is why self testing (along with advice about what the figures mean and what to do about them) should be encouraged: it's this mantra of "no need to test" that really winds me up: it's really about money not about good health advice and is the single most dangerous thing to come out of these courses.

If they instead said something like "you may be OK to eat brown rice but check your blood after and if it spikes then you know you can't eat it in the amount you ate, so reduce the amount or try something else and test again" would be far, far better advice! (As it happens, I can eat brown rice in moderation, something I've found by testing!)

That shouldn't be a hard and fast rule, different people will manage on different amounts. I cut out pasta/rice/potato/bread and my "weight by date" software tells me that I'm consuming about 80gms of carb a day. For me that's fine.
