Hello everyone,
I'm going to be doing work experience within the next few weeks .

Even though I am only 14 I do know what I want to be when I'm older ,the job I want is to. Be a diabetes nurse for children ,this is because of me being a diabetic myself I understand what the children go through and feel so there's an understanding there. I was wondering what sort of work experience would be useful to put onto my CV for applying to jobs?
Anyone have an idea?

That would be a rewarding career choice! I'm sure I remember reading a post by someone on the forum (a fellow diabetic) who was training to be a DSN. But I can't remember who...

The typical route into the above job is to qualify as a general nurse and then complete further education and training specific to diabetes.

Work experience that would look good on your CV for becoming a nurse would probably be something in the caring profession. So whether that be for the elderly or young, disabled or able bodied - as long as you express a keen interest in helping others, you'll be fine.

Work experience tends to play a very small role in employment further down the line, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. For instance, my work experience was in forestry, my last three Highers (Scottish A levels) were music, english and psychology - I then studied a FD in Marine Electronic and Electrical Engineering and now I'm an electrician on a ferry... There's no logic there whatsoever, and the work experience never came up in any interviews or application forms:)

Good luck!

Hi, maybe start as a Nursey school assistant, as the staff should be trained in certain medical conditions, if a child has a condition, or an infanr school. Good luck I hope you do really well and you will enjoy your chosen vocation :)

As to experience for your CV- well, as you say, your own experience as a diabetic should be seen as useful. My personal advice, though, is simply set about getting the best experience you can from here on. Tlak to a few folks already doing the sort of work you want- believe me, there are plenty out there who'll talk gladly about their own areas of expertise!

Also- good for you. Clearly a good person. We need more like you out there!

Being a paediatric diabetes specialist nurse would be my dream job too! I'm currently a paediatric staff nurse on a medical specialities ward. Feel free to message me if you were thinking of going down the nursing career route.
