First time I have had it since being T1 that was 3 weeks ago and I still feel like ****, feel so ran down and exhausted hardly checking my levels booked with an appointment with my DSN as I can't cope just having Lantus of my levels go high there is nothing I can do to bring them down.

I feel like I can't do it with diet alone I'm finding it hard and hate the feeling when my levels are high.

I can't eat the things I used to love as they spike my levels just feeling down.

Hi @Banktramp

Any reason why your DSN has started you on a bolus dose to take with your meals, lantus alone won't bring your bg levels down as it's just a background insulin.

It was the hospital that started me on it over 6 months ago, I only seen my DSN once and that was to give me a sharps bin and some leaflets to read.

Try and see them or your Dr asap, running high bg levels is not good and its no wonder you feel exhausted with it all.

Far be it for me to tell you what to do, but if you have high bg levels and feel exhausted then you should be testing for ketones to prevent the possibility of DKA, if I were you I'd ring in the morning and ask to be seen asap.

UPDATE:

Just been to see my DSN and still not impressed with her, told her all that was going on and she said I shouldn't have split my dosage of lantus but to go back to one hit and lower the amount - she also sent me for bloods (HNCA1) don't think that's correct sorry and I will get the results by the end of the week.

Still not given me any fast acting insulin and wants me to go back on the 20th December when they will be DICE team who she wants me to see.

I feel like I have got no further going to see her and lowering my dosage I'm just going to be running high BG levels.

Hi,

Sorry. I'm rather puzzled... Looks like you are prescribed a basal, background insulin only? Are you on any other meds??
Are you diagnosed T1 or T2?

I'm on Lantus also - When I switched to Lantus I was told a way of determining whether you were giving the right amount was if your Blood sugar levels remained within that normal range while fasting. So as I semi-fast every weekend I gave it a try and eventually decreased my amount of Lantus by 15 units - quite significant in my opinion.

If you're Type 1, I don't see the wisdom of just taking a bolus insulin like Lantus. The real magic in keeping you Blood sugar levels regulated are your fast acting insulins - like humulog, there's several others too.

I can't emphasize how important my humulog was in taking care of my normal meals, snacks and things. I'm not a doctor just a diabetic but ... for regular meals, snacks or even BAD tasty treats - fast acting insulin is key to keeping your Blood sugars regulated.

I'm surprised your doctor hasn't prescribed you any fast acting insulin. Does this person treat many people with type 1 diabetes?. Maybe you should ask.

Yes deffo a type 1 - @fletchweb
That's what I'm thinking, when she came out with I had split my dosage she got a bit arsey and who told you to do that, I told her I was a member on the forum and it's what I had looked into she seemed to back track a little as she could tell I had done my research.

I kept proving her about the fast acting insulin and she kept saying I would like a second opinion and send me for bloods again.

Two hrs after mealtime is a more accurate measure of one's control or whether you have enough insulin in your system to take care of the sugars generated by whatever you have been eating. The thing is - no matter how well you manage your condition there will be times where your Blood sugars will spike - this could be caused by having a cold or flu, an injury eating something that had more sugars and carbs than expected, being ****** off at someone or even having an Adrenalin rush from a sporting event etc. It's nice to be able to give a few extra units of fast acting insulin when those times happen to avoid the blah feeling one gets when having high Blood sugars.
The first 20 years that I had diabetes I was only on 1 shot of Lente a day (an early bolus insulin type made from beef and pork) but I was young and physically active and coupled by a high protein low carb/ low sugar diet was able to keep my BGs in line. But in this day and age I don;t think many people are still just on a bolus. If the hospital started you on Bolus 6 months ago, get a Hemoglobin A1C blood test done - it will indicate how often your Blood sugars are running high and may assist your health team in suggesting some kind of fast acting insulin regimen. Good luck and all the best!

Just got my HBA1c results back and they are 38 - is it possible to over use metforming and lantus ?? I'm was on 2000mg of metforming and 28units of lantus per day for the past month and think I have been eating just to keep my levels up and maybe overdoing the background insulin??

I was admitted to hospital as my BG levels was in the high 20's and had keystones in my urine they did a lot of blood test in hospital.

Yes I think lately been testing and have been getting BG as low as 2.1.

Totally confused 28 units of Lantus and 2000 grams Metformin.
Would it not be better if you lowered your Lantus and had a fast acting as well?

I have asked for fast acting, that's why she sent me for my HBA1C test to compare against my last one.

Your not the only one confused - I get no help or advice from my DSN or GP. I feel it's trial and error on my part and what I read on here, I will wait and see what my next appointment brings.
