My introduction

You know I've been visiting this site for so long, I only just realised I've never introduced myself!

I'm Caspar, I'm 28 and was diagnosed at age 14 as Type 1. My control isn't great but I'm working on improving this at the moment, I've only recently become motivated to sort things out for myself.

I'm on Lantus, 40 units, plus Humalog with meals. I've recently had a Continuous Glucose Monitoring System fitted which showed how bad my control was and helped spur me into action. I've just had confirmation of my DIANA (which I think is DAFNE elsewhere) course to learn to carb count, plus I met a consultant for the first time in three years yesterday, he's got me into a clinic at a local hospital and in six months will evaluate how things are going to consider me for an insulin pump. I'm hoping the DIANA course will have improved things by then.

I'm pretty healthy other than the diabetes, I've had no complications to date *touch wood*. Im currently training to run 10k this summer, simply for fun as part of a race rather than a sponsored event, and with luck continue on and run more and more! I've really enjoyed it, I've been umm-ing and aah-ing for months and have surprised myself at how into it i've gotten already.

That's all really, I thought I should pop this up since I just started posting elsewhere and realised it'd be polite to introduce myself :)

Thanks for reading!

Hi Caspar and welcome. :)

Always good to share experience and since you have been diagnosed for a full half of your life you obviously have much expertise to offer. 8)

Thanks Dan!

I'd never actually considered I've been diabetic for half my life!

I'd like to think I have experience to offer, sadly for the past 14 years I've had bad control. My last HbA1c 2 months ago was 9.8% :( However, I've become very motivated in the last few months. I met a great Diabetes Specialist Nurse who visits my local GP practice and she was quite honestly the first medical expert I've met in all that time who I felt really listened to me. Instead of telling me what I'm doing wrong, she told me what I could do right. It's thanks to her I got the continuous glucose monitoring system fitted, and got onto the carb counting course (called DIANA in my area, Tower Hamlets) and met the consultant yesterday, and also bought myself a meter I liked the look of rather than 'making do' with what they gave me (don't get me wrong, I appreciate the fact they give me freebies, but becuase I never paid for it myself, perhaps I took it for granted?).

Anyway, it's onwards and upwards from here on in! Expect to see lots of questions from me, and hopefully I'll be sharing advise too :)

Hello again Caspar :D

Experience comes in many forms and sometimes knowing what is not good or isn't right can be helpful to someone else - so nothing in this life is wasted! 8)

For example one of my friends who is a 'very well rounded individual' (her words) often says "You too can have a body like mine if you are not careful!"

You have found your way to a great resource with friendly, helpful people always willing to help. I look forward to your postings. :)

PS Who is Dan? :?

Apologies - the email notification of new replies comes from 'dan' so that was stuck in my head when I came to type the reply!
