i have just tested my blood sugar and it was 28.3 this is the highest it's ever been. I did have a small chocolate as a treat earlier but that was 5 hours ago. What should I do, is it high enough that I need to go to the hospital. I am very thirsty and I know that this is a sign of high sugars. Please help me.

On the plus side, your BS is reducing ... I would suggest if your not feeling to good then do ring the NHS help line
Do you have any ketone test strips ?

Since my stroke I never feel very good. I am feeling thirsty. I don't have any ketone test strips. My son has returned early so I will be able to go for a walk. I will test again when I return.

How are you treating the diabetes, and the stroke aftermath.? I am a T2D on orals, and I found that the heart meds were preventing my diabetes meds from working properly. In particular the Lansaprazole (or Omaprazole) stopped absorbtion. Moving my Clopidogrel and lansaprazole to the nightime slot away from my daytime meds improved matters.

As regards the high levels, yes they are, but I was having higher levels than that without too many problems, Provided you really are T2 and not insulin dependant, then you and I are at less risk of Diabetic Keto Acidosis (DKA) since we do produce some of our own insulin. Google DKA so you understand the symptoms since it can be quite a serious condition.

I personally found that a low Carb diet dramatically reduced my bgl quite quickly. If you are not on insulin then this is something you could try out quite easily and quickly to see if it helps you get them down again.

I am not taking insulin, I am on metformin only. I have just returned from a walk and they are dropping nicely 22.6 now. I have discussed with my GP the medication I am on and he is happy with the timing of all my drugs. I am on clopidogrel, avorvastatin , mirtazapine and metformin. I only take the clopidogrel in the morning and the rest in the evening.

I have lots of issues caused by my stroke and this quite often masks the impact of diabetes.

Thank you for all your help and comments. I think things are settling down, I have never had sugars that high before so it was quite worrying

You ought to discuss with GP adding something like lansaprazole since this reduces stomach acidity that the Clopidogrel will inevitably cause, and which can lead to peptic ulcers or other bleeding issues long term. Also this is advised if taking low dose aspirin long term for same reason. It helps to protect the tummy, but can interact with absorption of other meds as I found.

The Metformin only helps reduce bgl by a limited amount (2 or 3 mmol/l at best) so you may need to consider adding another diabetic med to get levels down.

Or change diet like I did. Not only did my new diet drop my bgl back to near normal levels, it also dropped my BP and I have been gradually reducing my BP meds, and the secondary diabetic meds. I am not cured, (as Xmas has proven to me), but I am in control.

When I was first diagnosed, it was 26+.

They immediately put me on a drip of insulin at the hospital, until it came down to 6 (took about 2 to 3 hours if I remember correctly). I was given 500mg metformin for morning and night, and 3 days later it was 11. Doctor added 30mg of Diamicron MR and a week later it was 6. It's been in control since then (Dec 2015).

Grumpy bosses!
My level at diagnosis - 29!
I think if it hadn't dropped down over the 6 hours I was waiting in hospital, they would have kept me in. Came out with a prescription for metformin and Gliclizade (I always spell this wrong!) at 12.30 in the morning. Tried Metformin for 2 weeks (at which point my stomach rebelled!).

In 2015 I had dailies of 33+ and my HbA1c was 99, so GP made a referral to a specialist for insulin training. I pleaded for one last chance to correct my ways, and we agreed that I could SMGBG for a month to see if I could reduce to something sensible. I managed to get back down to 15 peaking at 24 so that was enough to cancel the insulin and continue SMBG to see where I could get it, My GP said I would struggle to get my HbA1x below 70, but I managed 53 2 months later.

Then I discovered LCHF, which I started Dec 2015 along with a supplement cslled Bitter Melon. Suddenly I was getting hypo's and so I cut my Gliclazide dose in half. I have just posted my results since that Xmas on the success stories thread, and remember that the XMAS 2015 was when I followed tradition rather than best practice, and let it all hang out, so I spiked quite badly then. But it came down very quickly when I restarted my diet. My last HbA1c came in at 42, and my GP wants me to get it higher, so I have just further reduced my Gliclazide dose to 1 tab a day. I am currently running with a daily average around 7.5 but its reducing as I stop dumping liver stored excess glucose.

Edit to add: my GP did not consider a bgl of 33+ as needing hospital treatment, and I felt ok and healthy at that level. Even when his meter went HI and blew the whistles at us.

I'm sure there's more.
I was rushed into the hospital must be three years back maybe more when I hit a reading of 28. All I'd had that day was a ham salad and a lot of water. Couldn't understand it. At the hospital I was told that the pain in my legs the blurry head other symptoms I can't remember now and the high reading were the results of statins. This they said was the fourth time the hospital had told me that statins and me were not a good mix. I stopped them and never had anything like that again.
