Diabetes ahaha !!!
Just had my 6 monthly check up and my blood sugar is through the roof my own fault feeling depressed so have eaten the wrong things for a while. Doctor today has said that I have to go onto insulin. I drive for a living so would loose my job if on insulin do you think if I were to eat as I should I would be able to bring the levels back down with out insulin. I have only been diabetic just over 18 months.

If you are serious about getting your blood glucose down then you should be able to get reasonable results in two weeks or less - assuming you are a fairly fit fellow - because I am a rather dumpy old woman with a dodgy knee and I did it.
It will mean getting rid of sugar and starchy foods, but you can eat bacon and eggs for breakfast, put cream in your coffee rather than milk, you can have full fat everything and eat salad and low carb veges such as cauliflower, or have mushrooms and sweet pepper.
Do you have a blood glucose meter?

Hello and welcome to the Forum. Here is the Basic Information we give to new members and I hope you will find it useful. Ask as many questions as you need to and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you'll find well over 147,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.

There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:
  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates
Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Read more on carbohydrates and diabetes.

Over 145,000 people have taken part in the Low Carb Program - a free 10 week structured education course that is helping people lose weight and reduce medication dependency by explaining the science behind carbs, insulin and GI.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to blood glucose testing supplies.

You can drive if you take insulin and you should keep your job, I think you just have to test before you drive to make sure your blood glucose is at or above a certain level and check every 2 hrs or so. Check out the searched link below for previous asks on this subject. I think you have to inform the DVLA though. I really think you should be open minded about the insulin medication, and i'm sure I've also read some posts where people have actually come off insulin after a time. Stay positive if you can

Thanks for the reply you can drive as you say but unfortunately due to my job having the occasional blue lights I would have my work licence revoked if on insulin.

I must confess that I have been eating low carb for a long time whenever I can get away with it - and I find it really simple and not at all faddy. I have my 'toys' in the kitchen. An 'Actifry' or other hot air cooker is worth buying just to make crispy chicken thighs. You open the lid of the cooker, remove the top of the pack of chicken thighs, tip chicken into cooker, close the lid, and set for 45 minutes. You do have to endure the smell of cooking chicken after about 10 minutes, but it is worth it.
I also have a halogen oven. It makes roast pork to die for. You open the lid, put in the meat on a rack over a tray or bowl, upside down to start with close the lid and set the temperature a little cooler than normal and cook for an hour, then you add vegetables to the bowl, turn the joint over and increase the temperature, cook until done.
I ordered a hogget from the butcher when I was diagnosed, and just collected a half a pig this afternoon. Oh a hogget is a well grown lamb, less fatty than younger animals.
You might find that you eat a lot of cauliflower, cabbage and salad stuff, doing low carb, but there are far more positives than problems with that way of eating.

Oh I see then in that case you would not be licenced to drive an emergency vehicle, I did not know your circumstances though reading your original question this wasn't mentioned. I think the rules regarding this are in place to protect both the person concerned and the public, I'm sorry this disease may cause you a problem. However should you wish to remain with whatever emergency service it is you work for then they should offer some alternative or they run the risk of litigation under the Disability Discrimination Act.

All is not doom and gloom for you though @Knighthawk22 As I'm sure you have read that some people have come off insulin, so please don't lose heart. I don't know what you do but I'm sure there are others in your area or profession that have had the same issue, try contacting them for help and support. There may be a blog run by someone in another part of the country, if not then start one of your own or on here and offer each other support. All this will give you a positive mind set not to let this disease get the better of you or destroy your career. I hope all goes well for you :)

I'm sure you can do it, if I can give up the carbs anyone can!! This forum is a lifesaver, literally, I went from feeling completely alone and not knowing what to do, to feeling helped, cared about and able to find answers ... trust me you've found a good place here

Really surprised myself at the speed the results started to come back down purely through cutting down on all carbs.

Yes it really does make a difference. I'm also finding that a bit of exercise makes a significant difference too. When I first started, I was trying to go for a walk every day, but lapsed a bit. Today I made a point of working really hard (good walk and hammering some stakes in at the the allotment) and my BG is back down to the numbers I had before lapsing. Reducing carbs is great, but exercise is also a real help. (And that's coming from a proper bat fastard (refer to The Full Monty)).
