Is your Diabetic Nurse more helpful than this?

Being diabetic
Being overweight
noisy neighbours
I am feeling very miserable today.

We recently moved to a lovely bungalow about 12 miles from our previous home. This of course meant we had to register with a new medical centre and being diabetic of course I had to have a complete check-up - HbA1c at the top of the list.

I was glad to have the chance to talk as my blood glucose levels have been
sky high, but this I put down to the stress of moving and imminent surgery for a hip replacement and on top of that I have developed a really nasty attack of shingles.

Now the diabetic nurse I used to see at my previous surgery was wonderful, sympathetic and always helpful. I saw her for about 10 years and then unfortunately for me she retired and was replaced by a much younger nurse who was very efficient but not quite so friendly, but very OK.

The nurse (about 40-ish) I saw today was very brusque and bossy, told me it was not unusual for somebody who has had Diabetes Type 2 for 12 years to deteriorate , especially somebody as overweight and old as me - I am in my 70s - and what do I expect when I have shingles.

I have to double my metformin, I am not to eat bananas and must never drink fruit juice (I don’t) and keep to a very strict diet - “and report back’ to her in two weeks!

Report back? I really don’t want to see this uncaring woman again.

I am desperately trying to find a more friendly person and would even travel several miles to see the Diabetes team at the local hospital.

Sorry for the long story (but I wanted to have a whinge)

Does anybody else have to see a nurse like this? I would be glad to hear anybody’s opinion.

Rude people! Not being able to do the things I want to do.
It varies from area to area but I would try and see a doctor and get a referral to the local diabetic team at the hospital.

I would be quite firm in your request and also explain your reason why !

Hi carb Foods
Janieb,
I'm in Rossendale too, who do you deal with? My specialists are at Fairfield (Bury) and their trust don't communicate with my GP's so I have to fetch & carry lab results. :?

Jamieb and Fergus,

If you want to discuss doctors or HCP's by name and location please use the PM system as we do not allow names and locations on the board.

Self absorbed and rude people! Motorists who are oblivious to the rest of the world, and really don't give a ****!
Diabetic nurse! You mean that practice nurse I see once a year who takes my blood pressure and checks my last hospital results

They don't want me to self test, and yet when I recently asked for a form from receptionist to get checks, she said that is normally for GP to recommend and not the patient, I told her that it had not been the case previously, she went off for a long discussion with (I assume) a GP, and came back with the form! How do they suppose I am to control my diabetes when I have to make an appointment for GP each time just to ask for a form, and then go back a week later for results, and so grudgingly given? Not much help really, although I did just receive my annual eye check, at least something is working LOL

Testing strips are so expensive and I have to pay for my prescriptions, why is diabetes treated in this way, I understood that life threating illnesses entitled free prescriptions, are the Government saying diabetes is not life threatening? I think I am right in saying that if diabetics are on medication they get free prescriptions, or maybe that is just insulin dependants, but surely it would be a wiser, better and cheaper long term option to assist non medication diabetics to remain that way?

You sound like you have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic not actually diabetic but could be if don't control what you eat (or am I wrong?) - have you been told what type you are - I assume it would be type 2. You would need to see your nurse more then on a once a year basis. I have seen comments on this forum that said once diagnosed as dibatic you should get your prescriptions free but I am 61 and get them free anyhow.

According the the NHS guidelines we should get our tabs on prescritpion but my doctors said no but how am i to control it if I don't know what my blood sugar is doing - having spoken with my Diabetic nurse and told her what I am doing and trying to lose weight etc she said I should speak to the doctor that she might change her mind - I haven't done that yet but intend to.

I wish you well and hope that your doctors change their views and are more friendly to you.

Sue :)

You have to be a Diabetic AND on medication before your prescriptions are free. Of course there are other ways you may claim free prescriptions.
