Frequent Urine infections?

Was wondering if anybody else suffers from frequent or recurrent urine infections? I ask because I'm on my second in the space of about eight weeks, and I'm aware that having diabetes can make you more prone to them. Does anybody have any hot tips for avoiding them, or have anything that helps mitigate the symptoms whilst waiting for the antibiotics to work (again)?

Hi. Are you having bacterial infections needing antibiotics or the common candida (yeast) infections due to sugar in the urine? Candida needs the reduction of blood sugar and something like Canestan temporarily. Although diabetes can make many things worse, if your blood sugar is under reasonable control it shouldn't be the cause of bacterial infections?

@Daibell bacterial infections unfortunately. My control hasn't been fantastic in the past, but since starting tresiba it has improved dramatically, so even though my last hba1c was 66, I'm expecting my next one to be in the mid to low 50s, hopefully.

@azure thank you, definitely something to try when I get home :)

Thank you for your advice everyone!

Apparently, if I have three more this year, I get the dubious honour of being put on 'preventative antibiotics'.

I'm now on preventative antibiotics- the last infection I had was particularly nasty and had very strong antibiotics- yes being diabetic causes more water infections especially if you're already prone to them . None of the old wives tales work either, just get a prescription as soon as you feel 'the burn ' - the usual 3 day course never totally worked for me so that may be also why you have had a recurrence so soon . Drinking plenty of water helps of course

I used to get uti's one after the other. Ended up seeing a urologist. She recommended taking D-mannose. Oddly enough, after I had a cystoscopy, i didnt get many after that. I think mine were menopausal. Cranberry can help too.

Watered down cranbury juice. I have them literally every other week and it's the only thing that helps! It also makes you go more... which flushes the infection out.

If the water bottle does help you can also buy thin sticky heat pads that can be worn under clothing, Boots used to do them do expect they still do.

If you don't want to bother with cranberry juice, there are cranberry tablets available. I take one a day as a preventative and I'm pleased with how they work for me personally.

I also take probiotics.

If you google cystitis @EllsKBells you'like find lots of lifestyle tips that can help a little.

Do not worry about the "preventative antibiotics". I have been taking Trimethoprim @100mg for 5 months and stopped last week. I had a few courses as the infection kept returning after 3-5 days after the courses finished. Had lots of urine tests to determine which antibiotic was best. You can only stop on them for 6 months max. I drank asda fizzy lime and lemon flavoured water with lemon barley water and Doc said take lime juice to help flush the kidneys as I have a couple of K-stones. Already had one out which took 4 ops to clear. Not pleasant as like p***ng razor blades LoL! Drink enough to keep the urine colour as clear as possible. I was drinking every hour or so a glass tumbler of L & L. I also ate lamb with barley, carrots and celery done in the oven. Plenty of barley as it is an old fashioned remedy for water infections. Now not up 2-3 times a night and sleep all night.

Thank you for your advice everyone! Especially about drinking water and hot water bottles. I'm on day two of my antibiotics now, so I feel much better today than I did yesterday. If I end up on preventative antibiotics it isn't the end of the world, but I'd like to avoid it if I can, because I already take about 15 pills a day, which isn't many compared to some people but feels like a lot to me :)

Hi EllsBells i had these after every period and got put down to a c section and diabetes. This went on for over a year and then i got referred to a specialist. Had loads of blood tests done. Got put on thrush tablets weekly as they helped stopping infections and also they also found i had vitamin b 12 . Hardly ever get them now maybe 1 a year. Hope that helps i know how painful they are and how weak you feel.
