Hi There,

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Keytones and what the maximum levels should be? - I just did a random test and although my sugars are 6.2 I'm showing 0.2mmol keytones? Is this normal or something to be worried about? Any help would be appreciated.

Additionally, how often should I be checking. I'm type 2 insulin dependant; don't remember what the nurse said a few months ago abou them other than checking if I was sick/hi?

Thanks :)

Hi @not-so-lucky

Here's some info about ketones:

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care/testing-for-ketones.html

Is there any reason you tested? Are you ill or feeeling ill?

Your ketone reading is low :)

Thanks Azure - Just feeling a bit off it and tired - I've noticed after many years of poor control and now getting into the insulin driving seat I do have a memory after all now the mind fog from high sugars has lifted :)

Although; I'm still to this day unsure which type I am - My GP said Type 2; when I developed retinopathy the consultant said Type 1? - Was on Metformin and Gliclazide for years... Annoyed with my 'lack' of support in understanding what the heck's going on with my body lol - also getting conflicting info from different sources doesn't help; for example; last week my consultant endocrinologist changed 3 medications my GP had put me on? (No lie) lol....

I'd tend to go with an endocrinologist rather than a GP. There are tests to indicate what type you are, but it's probably a bit late now if you've been diagnosed a while.

It sounds like you're doing well if your blood sugar is 6.2 :)

The only time I had an issue with ketones was when I was in hospital with an infection and they found high ketones in my urine and forced me to eat. Mind you I do need to be more vigilant myself and get testing strips for home as I'm insulin dependant.

In regards to being on insulin, it sounds like you have had diabetes for some time. I also had diabetes for 12 years when they did the GAD and c-peptide tests on me again (had it twice before, one at diagnosis in 1998 and the other in 2005). The tests done in 2010 showed I hardly produce any insulin anymore. The GAD test though was showing it wasn't auto immune. My endocrinologist just told me that I'm still type 2 and I now needed to be on insulin therapy for life as drugs only work when you produce sufficient insulin yourself. Maybe that is the stage you're at?

Hi not so lucky i had problems years ago with my diabetic consultant they kept taking me off medication what my doctor had prescribed kept saying i don't think you need them but one was a blood pressure tablet this was after i had my last stroke my doctor wasn't happy to say the least as far as I'm aware my doctor contacted said diabetes specialist and i haven't seen them since so be careful i don't think but not sure that any diabetic persons are allowed to change any medication that doctors prescribed without doctors consent as for keytones I have a meter that gives both bg and keytones only time it alerts me to keystones is if my sugars are high so don't really know what they are normally I'm sure someone on the forum will let us know .Take care

If your sugars are low then there is no danger of ketoacidosis - that is high ketones and high sugars.

One of the newer type 2 drugs has been found to cause ketoacidosis with low sugar levels ... Canagliflozin (or any with the ...flozine ending

Hi @not-so-lucky This pic is helpful

You will see that your reading is very low. Nutritional ketosis starts at 0.5 and goes up to 3.0 mmols/mol. You have to be close to starving to get above that. Ketoacidosis is an order of magnitude higher and you can't get there with low blood sugars.

If you are over 0.6 you have ketones ,if its below that your fine xx also even though your sugars are normal you can still get ketones xx
