Gee Pammy that's a big load on your plate that your going to need some help with face to face. I can say that the only way to lose weight is expend more energy than your putting in, type 1 doesn't change that. You really really need to be given some help in understanding your condition, your insulin as relates to exercise and hypoclycemia. Are you in the UK Pammy? If you give a rough idea of where you live others can provide ideas on where to go to get proper support. I'm astounded that you have had so little help.

It's not an easy condition to get your head around @Pammy_50.

What isn't your Nurse doing for you that you think she should be?

It would be beneficial for you to get a copy of the following book, it's really good at explaining all things diabetes and insulin related:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/cka/Thin...naging-Diabetes-Insulin-Completely/0738215147

You have the option for either the Kindle version or paperback.

If you have any specific issues that you're struggling with, then please feel free to post your questions and I'm sure we can offer advice:)

Hi @Pammy_50 it sounds like you have type 3c diabetes, that is diabetes caused by physical damage to the pancreas from pancreatitis or removal of the pancreas, rather than type 1 diabetes which is caused by an autoimmune disease. Type 1 and type3c are treated the same but with type 3c you might need to be aware of a few different things: my understanding is that creon impacts on the diet that's available to you; losing your whole pancreas immediately means no alpha response to hypos whereas type 1 only kills the beta cells, although the alpha response will wear out over time. You might want to check out the type 3c forum - http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/category/type-3c-pancreatic-diabetes.73/

What type of insulin regime are you on?

With type 3c you should really have access to a diabetic specialist nurse for support as you commence insulin. Are you under an endocrinologist or is it you GP practice nurse your talking about?

Hi there! Firstly, well done on getting through that diagnosis and all the surgery. Secondly, I think you've found the right place for help and advice. Type 1 can seem complicated and daunting at first. Over time it becomes second nature - although you will have to battle and work on it every day. I am 32 years in and by no means a perfect diabetic.

Perhaps you should start with "baby steps" - just get your blood sugars under control and within the range your docs/nurses have advised for you. Then you might be able to work on the weight gain by tweaking your diet, adding exercise to your routine, etc.

Good luck :)

If that's your GP practice nurse they will probably never have heard of it. You should be under an endocrinologist and have access to diabetic specialist nurses. A DSN will be much more help with insulin adjustments - a diabetic practice nurse at the GP just won't have the experience to provide the support required for someone being treated on a basal/bolus regime.

Should I ask to be referred back to diabetic consultant at hospital.
Thank you once again I have looked on site for 3c diabetes some of the issues raised are familiar.
I also take Creon so I have alot to deal with and learn.

Perhaps if you are very sedentary then even small carb and calorie intake could add weight. Maybe, more likely, it's something other than or additional to the diet? Worth asking your doc if it's becoming a concern. And you will get there with the diabetes, keep working away at it :)

Hi,

Sorry to hear that you had to go though all this. Hope you find some solace here in the forum even if it was only kind words. Dont give up, you come such a long way and survived. Although it will look a big mess there will be light on the end of the tunnel and then you can look back on it all and say 'i have done it! YES!
