Hi,

I've been chatting to other people and, having been diagnosed with T1 this year, I have heard contradicting thoughts on the relevance of diabetes in the family and how generation links work. What generation are you?

When diagnosed I was asked if there was history in the family and the last person to have it was my great grandfather. The specialist explained that this link was probably too weak to be of relevance yet another family friend has suggested that their great grandparent was the last generation to have T1 in their family too.

This is simply out of interest. I know this forum is of great value for probs and queries and this is not hugely important, just curiosity so appreciate anyone who has the time to answer.

Cheers for now

Dave

Re: Just out of interest - do you have diabetes in the famil

I don't know the answer....but I was diagnosed T1 aged 4, my Dad was diagnosed T2 at 60, my maternal grandfather was T2, my paternal Gmother was T2....my grandma, expected my father to be type 1, as her father was type 1 (they think...he died over 70 years ago.

So yes, we are certainly prone to diabetes..although teh type seems to change!

Hello,

I'm one of 5 diabetics in my family (all of us are cousins, consisting of me and my brother plus 3 cousins who are also all siblings - 2 girls and a boy who is the middle child)

All 5 of us are related through blood on my mothers side of the family. Also interesting is that all the boys were later onset at around 18, while the two girls were diagnosed at birth.

Me - diagnosed T1 aged 29.
My paternal uncle - diagnosedT1 19(ish)

Have read that a diabetic's children are subject to a slightly higher risk of becoming T1 than non-diabetic's. Can't remember the link though and it was only 1 study.

Not sure about a link. Is there one???
Was told when first diagnosed that the flu I'd recently had was more likely to have caused it than my genetic links because of their age and other health problems! hmmmmm!!??

Re: Just out of interest - do you have diabetes in the famil

Thanks all for taking the time to answer. It seems that there's no set rule so far, although fascinating to see that there are others with just a great grandparent link too, baring in mind I was told that it probably wasn't relavant.

Joelcam - I feel I've opened up a can of worms in relation to the milkman! Apologies!!!

Thanks again

Re: Just out of interest - do you have diabetes in the famil

As I read the post responses I was beginning to feel "left out" as diagnosed a Type 1 aged 4 years – most probably due to mumps.

Absolutely no one in my family on either maternal/paternal side had/have Type 1 or Type 2.
Great great grandfather was 105 when he passed away.
Great grandparents & grandparents all lived to a ripe old age 90+.

Are Type 1's with no apparent genetic link in the minority :?: :!:

I think therefore I might also be related to the milkman

My daughter was diagnosed type 1 at age 4 years. To our knowledge no one in our family history has had any form of diabetes.

Re: Just out of interest - do you have diabetes in the famil

I was diagnosed aged 9 with T1, no history of either type in previous generations. My older sister was diagnosed with type 2 a few years ago but is now on insulin, and my eldest sister diagnosed with diabetes while pregnant and is now type 2.

Incidentally it was thought my diabetes was caused by being on many long courses of antibiotics as a young child as I suffered multiple urine infections.

hi,
my son was diagnoised with t1 at 13 last year. We do have a distant cousin with t1 in both myself and my husbands family. Also my sons great grandmother had t2 , one of her daughters is also t2. But we are from a huge family so we dont really have much history. The consultant thinks it was due to multiple infections last summer.

Hi

I was diagnosed type 1 last year aged 42, my younger brother was diagnosed T1 20 years ago when he was 16.

There must be a link somewhere!

Re: Just out of interest - do you have diabetes in the famil

I was diagnosed type1 in july last year aged 44, big shock, always been slim, active and healthy.

No one EVER in my family has had diabetes. I have four children and wonder because i've only got it now will they not get it through family link,i'd hate them to have this.

Re: Just out of interest - do you have diabetes in the famil

Sunflower - I think this thread shows that there's not necessarily a specific family link although, there may be one so it's perhaps worthwhile getting your children checked and being aware of the signs. As much as I can understand that you wouldn't want your children to have this, it'll be better to keep it in mind that it's possible they may have and just get them checked out.

I realise this may not be what you want to hear but I'm learning so much about this, being fairly new to it myself, one of the most valuable things to remember is that it's treatable and there are options to maintain a "normal" life.

Best of luck

Dave

Re: Just out of interest - do you have diabetes in the famil

Hi Dave,

When i was diagnosed T1 i ws 25. I was told that because maternal grandmother had it all her life and my paternal aunts and uncles had T2 in their 60's and 70's it was probably hereditary. None of my brothers have it nor does my mum or dad so i put it down to a mixture of enjoying myself when i was younger (out on drink every weekend) and genes.
