I asked to be referred because my BS have gone haywire and nothing is working. I am not overweight and do moderate exercise daily - housework, walking with set goal of 7000 steps a day - sometimes plus, sometimes not. Metformin upped to double last Dec - now on 2000g per day.

My high BS were around 10 - 12 - when I got back from holiday with severe jet lag - they made all time high of 23! Guess not good time to check. But every day fasting check each morning at around 17! Now I'm trying no carbing as of yesterday - but so hungry! My BMI is 21 btw - retired Lecturer and weight 9.5 stone.

Now I feel I am showing signs of neuropathy - legs and feet throbbing, burning. Pain in lower back - hips - thighs area and some loss of feeling - all exacerbated by walking.

Personally with a morning fasting blood glucose of 18, I would be heading to an emergency room or looking for an extremely urgent appointment with a diabetes specialist. Please read up on the symptoms of a DKA, just in case those numbers get worse. Do you have access to a way to test ketones?

I agree with Zand -- sounds more like LADA than MODY. But do please get checked up asap -- with numbers like that you shouldn't wait for a referral. And yes -- do check for ketones. Good luck!

I've been dx for 10 years. Gave up smoking 18 mths ago by Dec 16 BS - under control for 8 years - shot up to 11. I found a study that correlated increased BS up to 3 years after quitting. Not hitting the cookie jar - so to speak - haven't gained weight. It was an endochronologist who suggested MODY as family history and I am, always was, slim.

OK, well I won't argue with an expert, but MODY usually occurs in children and can cause them to be overweight, just like adult T2s. LADA's are usually adults who are slim and are often misdiagnosed as T2 to start with when in fact they have slow onset T1. I just think you fit the 2nd group more than the first.

Whatever the diagnosis I do hope you can find someone to see you sooner rather than later. How are your BG's now?

Aw Zand -- shame but now I have to disagree with you. As the name suggests, MODY (Mature Onset.....) doesn't usually occur in children. I was diagnosed with it in my slim late 40s -- apart from the smoking my profile is similar to the OP (including family history of T1). I agreed with you re LADA simply because I wouldn't expect MODY numbers to surge quite so high and stay there, whereas that does seem a common LADA experience. So we still agree really.

OK. It's not just children, but it is usually diagnosed before aged 25, that's why it's Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young. I know of one little girl who was diagnosed with it aged 2, that's where my misinformation arose from. Sorry. Like I said, I'm no expert, but these guys think they are ;)

Anyhow, it still sounds like LADA to me.
And I am definitely T2 :)

Have you gone to emerg!? Have you been seen by a diabetic specialist? I found your post alarming and I hope that you are gaining access to support from people with some expertise. So much of one's access depends upon being an advocate for oneself and/or calling in one's family and friends to advocate with/for you.
Wishing you courage and well-being

Hi Rodney and others who replied - I've found the source of my problem - I have a kidney infection - the aches, pain and fluey feeling - high BS are attributed to the infection. Went to Drs yesterday - on antibiotics - BS now lowering, and I am no carbing right now - keeping very close eye on them. Thanks for support

Zand - not necessarily just children. It was my daughter's endocrinologist who suggested it, and wanted to see me.
