I've been on Quietapine for quite a long time (used for my high anxiety and bipolar) and 2 of my GPS agree that it probably contributed to my type 2 diabetes diagnosis. I have researched the drug and I have found that it does in-fact increase my blood sugar and prevent me from feeling like my hunger is satiated. Now I that I have my blood sugar under great control and I am doing great with my low carb diet I am looking to improve on the medication I take daily so see if there are other ways of improving my control of my blood sugar ( I feel like making sure I am in the best place to control my diabetes is what I should be aiming for )

So I was wondering if anyone here has had any experience with either of these drugs while being diabetic and your recommendations I would really value your advice :D

I am on 100mg of queapine aday.
I and my psych are both aware of the drug causing type2 and or causing higher levels of bs readings. My psych will not increase it anymore because of increasing levels even more. My psych is very up to date with this.
My psych and me are both pulling my hair out because it's my gp surgery that are not doing their bit by doing 3 month blood tests to keep an eye on me, but they are not doing what my psych has requested in frequent blood tests.

I can't quite belive these posts. I have previously been on this medication, put weight on (3 stone) and diagnosed this year with type 2, even though I had been off the med for 1 year, my gp agreed this was reason for going from Pre diabetic to T2. A few weeks ago I realised I was becoming Ill again and was prescribed quatiapine again, it is the only thing that makes me feel 'normal' but due to hflc working for my bg, I put off taking it until I had a smallish meltdown in town (highly embarrassed) yesterday. I am feeling disappointed with myself for resorting to the anxiety meds and can only keep telling myself to stay hflc, keep a close eye on bg and hope that it and my weight doesn't rise!! I was confused as to what to prioritise but good mental health will equal taking better alround care. Thank you for raising this issue.

I actually have the form here from the diabetic specialist and in it where it says what caused my diagnosis of type 2 diabetes it reads *induced by anti-psychotics*. I have been spending a lot of of time resarching anti-pyschotic medication, its medication trials and known problems and from what I can tell, quietapine has one of the highest risks of giving someone type 2 diabetes of all the family of those meds. The only one's I have found that have no risk of increasing blood sugar and giving someone diabeties is Aripiprazole and Ziprasidone.

Neither of those increase weight gain and in-fact have been proven to be weight neutral and even can help to lose weight and they also have no effect on blood sugars. They also basically do the same job as quietapine in regards to anxiety. I have put in a request to be switched to one of these medications with support from my GP.

I do thing it's sods law with being bipolar and t2.
If I come of my bipolar meds, I can have near to normal bs levels, then my bipolar becomes so bad that have to be medicated again.
My psych would rather I take my meds, then they affect my t2.
At one point when I was off all bipolar meds, I got so bad that I was complentating suicide, even going as far as going through with it. Was then sectioned.

Yeah I also have bipolar (type 2) which was why I was put on the meds in the first place. I think the reason the specialist put me on quetiapine was that it was the only med's shes had long experience with. If she tried to keep me on it again, I'm going for a second opinion

I agree with you about Q being well known for causing t2.
The only trouble I have, is that the Q is the only med so far that has kept me sane lol
My psych has a keen interest in t2 which us in my favour.
The only problem I have, my psych has written to my gp on numerous occasions requesting I have 3 months bs tests done but my gp refuses and gp will stick to the annual blood test

Well I cannot comment of course on what keeps you sane but there are a options that wouldn't effect your blood sugar from my research when it comes to anti-psychotics. As for your GP if they refuse make it clear that you are demanding the 3 months BS done and if not you could always speak to another GP.

So I went to see the specialist and she is refusing to switch me to a different anti-psychotic which thanks to supplies of Quietapine in the area I will now be forced into a cold turkey situation. She has decided to put me onto a beta blocker called Propanolol, yet another medication known to cause diabetes. I am literately sick of this women, she seems to only be willing to prescribe medication she has had experience with when it comes to other patients. I have now got 3 GP's all agreeing that I should be switched to Ziprazidone because of its weight neutral nature and non-effect on my blood sugar. I rarely ever get upset at specialists but she really seems like she does not have my best interest when it comes to her decisions

! I would, if you can, see one of the other GP's and let them know she is willing to let you go without your meds. I am on propanolol too and still needed my anxiety meds. I am sure you will be fine but I really feel a doctor should intervene if that's possible, you need someone positive fighting your corner not someone who is going to take away what may be for you, essential medication. i hope everything works out for you quickly and without further upset. Please take care

Seen my GP, he has over-ridden my specialist and has moved me onto Aripiprazole as in his opinion she is putting my mental health at risk

I really hope it works and am so pleased you have been listened to. I tried to reply yesterday but I think I added it onto your original thread!!! I am going to give quatiapine a few more weeks as my bg hasn't been to high, but if weight gain and high bg is a problem will go back. Good luck

I'm having the same problems with quetiapine and bg lvls since my last HBA1C which was 53 I've lost approx a stone n a half, am now 2 weeks into giving up smoking yet my most recent HBA1C has only dropped by 1, the worst thing is I asked for quetiapine to help me with my ADHD meds (concerta) wearing off and I can take my melatonin, as used to take quetiapine for anxiety b4 I got diagnosed with ADHD only to discover my anxiety was thru having untreated ADHD, I am currently tapering off quetiapine as know that its that causing my high bg lvls I just unfortunately didn't realise how dangerous this drug was to diabetes, its not caused my diabetes I was diagnosed b4 I ever took quetiapine as it runs in the family from what I can gather, I have tried twice to get to talk to a doctor since discovering my HBA1C result only to be stopped in my tracks by the receptionists and told they can get me a call off the doc on Wed nxt week even tho I want to talk to a doc ASAP, but I luckily have a doc appointment on Wed over a diff matter, will my bg lvls lower once I'm off quetiapine as also need flat foot reconstruction surgery but orthopaedics wernt happy with my last HBA1C result and the fact I smoked, the smoking I'm sorting as I said earlier 2 weeks now as a non smoker, but get a horrible feeling my bg lvls aren't going to be satisfactory for orthopaedics, thanks in advance n hello everyone
