I was wonderin if anyone else has this problem an can advise me, just recently ive had severe pain in my leg muscles when walking and its been so severe ive had to sit down, im ok when i fist start but after about 10 minutes the pain starts also i duno whether its connected but i also have terrible swollen ankles and feet.
I would be grateful if anyone could help me before i visit the docs because i always feel like they dont listen and that im worryin about nothin!
Im on Simvastatin and Ramapril and after reading some of the posts regarding statins im wondering if it could be this causing it but ive been on them 2 years and never had probs before.
Any help would be gratefully received!

I had problems with Simvastatin about a year into it. I was taken off statins altogether when liver enzymes were raised, in addition I had leg and foot pains but my doctor wouldn't agree it could be linked to the statins. My liver recovered in about 6 months and the leg and foot pains cleared up completely after about 6 weeks. I would check it out just in case there is a connection and also it's important to have blood tests to check on your liver.

My suggestion is to go straight back to your GP and request to be put onto another statin.

Simvastatin did not suite me either, but its the first they try as it only cost a few pence to prescribe. I was then tried on atorvastatin and ended up on rosuvastatin. I was also advised to also take Coenzyme Q-10 as all statins block the natural Q-10 that is essential for muscles and that includes the heart. Since the change and addition of Co Q-10 the pains quickly eased and now I do not suffer any muscle pain, only generally from the pesky arthritis.

I buy my Q-1o from Healthspan because its easy to order and they quick to deliver (120 days supply for £10.95). To find Healthspan, simply Google it.

I do lots of walking and am also on Simvistatin. I find a period of warming up with stretches before the walk starts is vital, this prevents my pains. I tend to take it slow into the start of the walk allowing the muscles time to aclimatise. I also am a great fan of the Nordic style of walking which provides an all round better exercise

Hiya again,
I know people report horrible side-effects on statins, that's probably the most likely explanation. I remember a member, NannyBarbara, had aches and pains and discovered the cause to be Humalog, II'll try and find the thread and post a link for you.

I see that you mention that your ankles are swelling.. I think you would be wise to pay a visit to your GP..

Most people who experience joint/muscle pains with simvanstatins, those who use lantus, and only a few experience any probs with humalog complain about aches and pains not swelling hence why it' can be difficult to pin point it to a side effect...

There are other possibilities than drug interractions for leg pain that occurs after starting to walk. You really should visit your doc. Even he wouldn't try to diagnose via the internet!
Most people who get problems with statins get them very soon after starting them, it is also worth bearing in mind that in the clinical trials more people got muscle pains on the placebos than the statins.

Muscle pains are very common and I get that. Got a lot better coming off Statins. Glad to be off them, think they will turn out to be one of the horror drugs of our age. Know so many people who can't live with Statin side-effects.

thank you all for your replys im going to see the doc as soon as poss and i will keep you informed of what is happening. Leadingjo i was wondering whether it could be anything to do with my arteries because ive never experienced pain like it b4 and it was totally disabling until i sat down for 10 mins and then i tried to get home quick, the circulation isnt too good and my feet are constantly cold and so are my hands im just hoping its not vascular disease :(

hya just joined so a newbie on here

last year I started to notice pain in my calf when I walked to my sisters I tolerated it for quite a while until the pain almost made me cry

I went to the doctors in left ankle no pulse at the back and a pulse on the top right anke no pulse at fron and back I have seen the specialist and had a special scan I have arterial disease I have been offered angiplasty where they insert balloons into the arteries which can squash the disease ( fatty deposits ) he has told me of the danger of having this and he has given me a further 6 months to decide.

so I agree please go see your doctor

Im on 40 mg of simvastatin. I have really sever pain when walking which seemed to develope not long after diagnosis and prescription of simvastatin.

Its usually the calves but can be hips or/and knees. Id describe it as a very sudden fatigue and ache as if Id been walking 10's of miles. I have to stop and uphill is worse.
I have had examinations and scans for arterial disease and for spinal claudication- both were negative and the Drs are now scratching their heads.

Im pretty sure its either simvastatin or Metformin causing the problem. I mentioned this to my Dr at the beginning of the investigations and he dismissed it straight away as me reading too much on the internet.

Does anybody know of an alternative med to smvastatin I could suggest to him?
Thanks
