Can anyone throw any light. I am new to Diabetes and to the Forum. Everything medical about me is unusual. Diagnosed myself at 65 and it was Type 1. Two years on I have a pump which is fantastic. BUT
before the pump and just yesterday I occasisonally have had very bad chest pain round the sternum. It radiated out and around and lasted full on for about 1 hour. BG 27.6 !!! Ketones 1.9 Very unwell all day. OK today but a little high.
I have been extensively checked and it is not heart related, neurological or upper gastro related. Therefore I would think it is diabetes related. Did the BG raise and give attacks, or did attacks raise BG. Always happens just as I wake up. Diabetes Dept. haven't heard of it - does anyone have any ideas.

Hi

I am replying to my own post as 139 have viewed and had no ideas to give me. I have just discovered that pumps sometimes occasionally clog with a v low basal rate - mine 0.3 from midnight - 3am. Severe chest pains, etc start about 7am on 5 occasions. No episodes pre pump. Therefore I am investigating with Medtronic in US who are going to test my infusion set from the last episode. Did you all know that the pump manufacturers offer this service. Don't through away your infusion set when you have a problem - send it for testing.

If I were you I'd get myself along to A&E next time it occurs. I suffer with occassional VF and it would start during the night after a low when my liver would dump and send me high.....so yes, high BG's can affect the heart.

thanks for replying. What is VF? During the first episode I was taken to A and E by ambulance and kept overnight. They had no ideas and discharged me the next day. I have since had all heart, neurology and gastro tests and they are clear. Last time I had blood test during episode and they are clear too.
Today I have a hospital appt and am going to be very persistent with my enquiries!!

The 'F' stands for fibrillation ...an overactive run of contractions occurring in various parts of the heart due to erroneous electric impulses.
'A' stands for Atrium (atrial) and 'V' stands for ventricular (a ventricle).

My arrhythmia usually starts off as AF and if it gets too dominant will sometimes turn to VF and help usually has to be summoned.

Since being put on Victoza which smooth out the highs and lows, the frequency of AF is a rare event for me, which makes me think all the more that it is BG related.... I'm 67 by the way.

If I were you I would ask to be given a real-time heart monitor to wear (look up Holter) for a period of days and then they analyse the readings. Unless you get an actual 'pain' attack while you are at the hospital this is one way of letting them see for themselves what the problem is.

Good luck at the hospital specialist's and please let us know how you get on.
