Anyone know what might be up with me?

Right, I've had this problem for nearly 3 years and it's starting to really annoy me.

I wake up every day with a horrific feeling of nausea. This feeling means that I never eat breakfast unless I've hypoed, which is extremely rare, and this feeling can last between 12pm until about 3pm, this can also be accompanied by fatigue.

I've been to the GP and told my diabetic clinic and have been for test after test but still no joy, anyone got any idea what might be going on with me?

I've tried everything I can think of, eating before bed (experimented with food type, still no joy) changed my basal rate and monitored my bloods in case that had something to do with it, even stuff as simple as going to be earlier! I'm miserable and no-one seems to know what to do, any ideas?

hi there @HeartlessHaxisal
welcome to the forum !! :)

what are your blood sugars like at bedtime and waking up ?
you are saying you rarely have a hypo -- but are your blood sugars in range at these times ( 4.5 - 7 ) ??

Hi!

My bloods before bed are normally between 6-8 around 10:30pm-11:30pm, any lower and I make sure to have a small amount of long term carb as I can't risk not being able to drive into work.

When I wake up I'm normally between 5-7, and I was up and check my bloods between 6:30am and 6:45am.

thanks for that @HeartlessHaxisal

I was thinking if your bloods were above 9 or 10 that could be causing some nausea -- but you have ruled that avenue out.

I am not a breakfast person myself -- but equally I don't ever get nausea -- I am at a loss sorry.

hopefully somebody will come along that might be able to assist.

all the best !

Thanks for the help,

It seems I'm always able to stump people, my body really likes tormenting me, and help can come from people who may think that their advice is useless! Hopefully someone's had something similar and found a cure...

Have you had any tests to rule out anything?

You could try going gluten free or dairy free (not both at same time) to see if that helps. Some people test negative for coeliac disease but when they go gluten free their symptoms stop.

I've had numerous tests, the only name I remember was a synacthen test, the others had long names that I couldn't hope to remember.

I'm actually a vegan, so it can't be dairy, and I go carb free quite often to check my basal rate it correct and that doesn't seem to affect it. I don't think it's gluten intolerance, but I'll ask the GP if they can test for it, just to be sure.

As a vegan you probably don't want to consider this but I saw an article recently on the BBC on ex-vegan's who claim their health had improved after adding a small amount of meat back into their diet.

Maybe your body is lacking some vitamins, do you take any food suppliments/vitamin tablets?

Hi @HeartlessHaxisal - gosh, that must be horrid! Sending a hug.

I have never had trouble like this except when I was massively hyperthyroid some years ago, and to be honest I think even then it was down to the sheer volume of food I was having to eat to keep myself going with my double-speed metabolism at the time rather than a symptom of anything specific.

As you say you've had plenty of tests, but might it be worth asking your GP for a referral to an endocrinology specialist (not diabetes but all the other stuff!) and/or a gastroenterologist?

Hugs again.

I take a general multivitamin, an omega 3, 6 and 12 capsule, nutritional yeast flakes with vitamin B12, nettle, sea buckthorn, ginger, goldenseal, berberine and turmeric tinctures.

The GP did test to make sure my I wasn't low on anything, the only level that came back a bit low was vitamin D, which wasn't surprising considering it was done in January.

That is one thing I could never do, I've not eaten meat knowingly since I was 11, if it came to that I would just deal with this for the rest of my life, and this problem came about 7 months before I turned vegan.

I originally thought it was down to stress as I was going to be starting my GCSEs the following month, but it didn't stop, I turned vegan that Christmas and it made no change.

It's getting to that point I think, my GP seems a bit hesitant to do any kind of referral for me, but I'm getting desperate!

You sound like you have pretty much everything covered, I assume none of your results came back a bit on the high side as this can also cause health issues.

I assume you turned vegetarian at 11 and then vegan a couple of years ago? When did you get diagnosed with type 1? I don't think it is related but it just helps build a picture.

I am guessing you have been taking various vitamins/supplements for a number of years now on a regular basis. If so I would suggest you stop taking one of them for a few weeks/couple of months and see if there is any change in your symptoms and then move on and try excluding a different one instead. If you started taking something between 3 and 3 half years ago I would start with that.

No, the doctors didn't say anything about any of my levels being too high, I wish they had to be honest, would've made it a simple fix!

You would be right in that assumption. I was diagnosed back in 2001, I was 3, so I've got my act together and know how I react pretty well. My last HBA1c was 6.8, so I like to think I'm pretty capable of controlling my condition.

I'll try that, I did take myself on each of them in turn, but only for a week. It'll help rule them out at least.

Some diabetics can suffer from slow stomach emptying which can make you nausea. But only a specialist can determine that. Or maybe because you dont eat breakfast your stomach makes too much acid and that can make certain people sick as well.

A decent HBA1c number, my son was also diagnosed aged 3, he is only 7 now.

Hopefully you will get to the bottom of it and feel better soon. I am out of suggestions so will probably go quiet but it would be good to hear from yourself what the cause/solution was sometime in the future.

Hi,
The thing is, what evidence is there that it's related to diabetes?
If it is diabetes, gastroparesis would be a good candidate, yes. But it would happen during daytime rather than during the night, since you barely eat anything before you wake up.

Other things such as stomach acidity may be the cause? Or something intestinal? But your doctor has probably looked all over the place for that.

I read you take lots of complements. Maybe that's what it is? Complements are not a natural thing, I've never been a fan, but that's a personal feeling. I don't know if is the lack of protein, but there may be something missing in your diet, even if it is not meat, that artificial complements could not account for?

Do you do sports as well? And finally, it could be hormonal I guess?

Hope these lead are worth something, and that there is something that hasn't been looked at already... :)

I find that I usually vomit (although without nausea) only if eating something dry while my throat is also dry makes me cough continuously. The main thing that helps is drinking some liquid often enough to keep my throat moist. Does your nausea also keep you from drinking any liquids?
