Prediabetes
Hi I'm a prediabeic lady from County Durham England, 47 yrs old, and have Type 2 diabetes on both sides of the family. I've had struggles over nearly a lifetime with my weight and a huge appetite! Discovered LCHF last year and combined it with the Paleo diet I'd been exploring previous to that as a means to lose weight. Formula seemed to work but had to really watch carbs as even slight increase sent me flying off the wagon! (Ate a few sneaky jelly babies at my mother's house one day in march this year, and the sugar binge basically lasted til the beginning of september!:arghh: I regained all the weight I'd lost and all my previous symptoms came back - achy legs, lethargy, thirst, brain fog etc) Am now back on the wagon on Paleo Keto, which I find gives me best appetite control, bg levels and feel-good factor. My annual HbA1C came back normal just this week (yay!) despite 2 months out of the 3 the test measures having been disastrous ones diet-wise. I've finally faced the fact that this is how I have to live my life now, this is what works for me. Happy to join this community and look forward to learning and sharing with everyone!

Hi @KetoWolfLady - I love your name. I also relate to your ways of eating, and your sugar binge story. (Mine is a 'no sugar' atkins bar and fake sugar sweeties binge story, but it wasn't good for my BG just the same.) Looking forward to reading more of you in here on the forum! (And great that your BG levels are in the normal zone - well done!)

Thanks @AloeSvea ! I can't do fake sugar either - basically anything with a name ending in "-ol" I have to stay away from because my body seems to detect that it's chemically similar to sugar and I get terrible cravings (and then risk bingeing to the point of the "laxative effect" mentioned on the wrapper!:bag:) I can make fatbombs sweetened with saccharin though and cravings don't happen. I found stevia was ok too but I actually prefer the taste of saccharin - it reminds me of the secret delight of sneakily eating a couple my Uncle's hermesetas whenever I visited his home as a child. I loved the slightly bitter, lingering sweetness and still do!

I'm a stevia fan too, @KetoWolfLady. I don't know what my sweet tooth would do without it! (More likely - my friends and family when I low-carb bake cake and so on.)

I am best trundling along with nothing other than stevia sweetened chocolate though, and keeping my sweet tooth happy with berries, surrounded in a bunch of whipped cream or something almondy or vanilla-ery and cinnamon only. I have learnt my lesson with fake sweetened goodies. Hermesetas is another fake sweetener? I had better not say I will check it out... :)!

Oh yes Hermesetas/saccharin is very fake, no getting away from that, and probably one of those chemical compounds that Mother Nature never intended us to eat in any great quantity lol! I really wish I could love stevia, and maybe if I were to try some of the liquid options that might be better, but saccharin is the only sweetener I actually actively enjoy (yeah, I know I'm weird!) I've thought of trying monkfruit but it's a wee bit pricey at the moment - if I could find a natural sweetener I liked at the right price that would certainly be more paleo-friendly (I tend to follow a 90% plan where I can squeeze 10% non-paleo foods in - these forbidden items include saccharin, soy sauce and the odd can of diet sprite.)

Sugar alcohols are, however, the devils food as far as my digestion is concerned, and stand at the top of the demonic fake sugar heirarchy for me. They're also everywhere in commercial low carb goodies it seems. I prefer my own homemade chocolate fat bombs personally, and berries with whipped cream are indeed a delight! Oh, and funny you should mention cinnamon, I'm discovering this treasure fully now in such as pumpkin cupcakes and buttery keto fudge! Cinnamon seems to have a sweetness all its own so you need less extra sweetening (perhaps none in some recipes).

Hi All

Thank you to the admin team for accepting my registration.

First, I will say I do have diabetes but I will provide some background and the reason why I registered.

For the last 4 years I have managed my own branded chocolate business and at the beginning of this year started to work with Augmented Reality. Initially I put the two together and made the chocolates interactive for marketing purposes.

It was whilst learning and understanding Augmented Reality (AR) I had an idea which I believed would assist Emergency Services to treat people with pre-existing conditions. I floated this past a couple of paramedic friends who agreed the idea was good and would help them deliver the most appropriate treatment, quickly.

With this I set up Owow Innovations Ltd and in July we gained a 12 month funded place in a Tech Incubation hub, SetSquared in Basingstoke. SetSquared are mentoring us and helping to get the project into a position for investors. Essentially, we are looking at using AR to provide Emergency Services with critical patient information within seconds of reaching them.

This leads me to why I registered for the forum, I need your help! I need to learn a lot more about how you would currently make emergency teams aware of your condition, especially if you are unconscious or semi conscious. For example, our clinical adviser had an unconscious male admitted to A&E and it took and hour to discover he was diabetic. With our solution the clinician would have known in seconds.

I have a survey set up but cannot post the link just yet owing to the forum rules. If you can spare me between 10-15 minutes to complete it, once I can post the link it would really help my research and how we develop the product to suit your needs.

Thank you in advance for your time

Mike

Greetings to everyone,
Although a old timer of the diabetes world I have only just joined this forum. I got type 1 diabetes at the age of 17 and now managed to get to the age of 50.
whilst trying hard to maintain stable blood sugars as you all know it is not easy. I had laser treatment on my eyes about 15 years ago which was a great success and I maintain good eye sight. Over the last 7 years I have suffered with kidney issues but due to the good care of my specialist in the UK and now Dubai I have managed to prolong the inevitable. Unfortunately things slowly got worse and last December started on dialysis, which is not really recommended.
I have a donor for a transplant but am having major issues with my insurance company. Time will now tell and I am looking forward to my transplant and getting back to normal.
