Hi @Dazz1

Welcome to the forum from another with prediabetes. Have you seen @daisy1 advice for new members?

Tagging @Bluetit1802 and @AM1874 who have the best deals on meters in the UK.

If cost is not an option I would go for contour next and accucheck meters but the strips can be quite expensive.

With meters it is the cost of the strips that matter, not the meter itself. You only need one meter but you need many thousands of strips. The 2 meters with the cheapest strips, and very popular on this forum, are the Codefree and the Tee2. Pharmacies don't normally sell them. For people with diabetes there is an exemption from VAT.

Try here for the Codefree meter
http://homehealth-uk.com/product-category/blood-glucose/blood-glucose-monitor/
and here for the extra strips
http://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/sd-codefree-test-strips-to-be-used-only-with-the-sd-monitor/

There are discount codes if you buy in bulk and don’t forget to check the box that you have diabetes so you can buy VAT free.
5 packs 264086
10 packs 975833

The Tee2 is here, and the meter is free.

Hi @Dazzy1 .. and welcome
Just to add a little more info to the post from @Bluetit1802 ..

https://homehealth-uk.com/product-category/blood-glucose/
for the SD Codefree meter, which costs £12.98 or:
http://spirit-healthcare.co.uk/product/tee2-blood-glucose-meter/
who distribute the TEE 2 meter, which is free.
I have both which I alternate for comparative purposes and I have never found any significant difference between them.

The costs of testing comes down to the ongoing charges for test strips and lancets. Make sure that you tick the appropriate box on the on-line order form and you won't pay VAT on your meter or strips.
For the SD Codefree, the strips are £7.69 for a pack of 50 and there are discount codes available for bulk purchases:
5 packs x 50 use code: 264086 .. cost is £29.49
10 packs x 50 use code: 975833 .. cost is £58.98
For the TEE 2, the strips are £7.75 for a pack of 50 .. but there are no discount codes currently available

I'm testing 4 or 5 times a day, before meals and two hours afterwards .. this enables me to monitor trends over time and to check which (if any) foods give me "spikes" .. some folk also test their fasting blood sugar. Testing costs me around £10 to £12 a month but, more importantly, I now know what my BG levels are .. and I can manage them.

Hope this helps

Welcome! and try not to feel too overwhelmed - take it all one step at a time. But I agree - test, test and test again ! It's got my HbA1C down to 43 in just over 4 months !

I don’t think I will be using my accucek nano again once the test strips run out as too expensive

Does anybody else link their Tee2 to their computer
Even though the meter records in mmol the transfer to computer records in a different system
Can’t see any way of changing it
Bit confusing

I don't have that meter but if you have downloaded the figures into a spreadsheet just divide mg/dl by 18 to convert to mmol/l. I can't find an online handbook but I'm guessing there must be something there..

Just found the online handbook.. seems you can't change the units of measurement so I would give Spirit healthcare a call.. you may have been sent a dodgy meter.. they'll probably just send you another.
if you have lost the handbook its here
http://www.spirit-healthcare.co.uk/site/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/TEE2-User-Manual.pdf

Hi bulkbiker
I have finally rank Spirit Healthcare and they were great
It was possible to change the units of measurement although as you stated it doesent tell you how in the handbook
Just in case anyone else needs to change the unit of measurement for Tee2 software do the following
Open application/programme
Go to Home page
Click on the cog icon
Scroll down the page until you see mmol and put a dot in the box then click on tick icon and you are all done !
