Taking control

I have been through a whole spectrum of emotions following my diagnosis of Type 2, some 15 years ago. It started with denial when I refused medication because I could not understand why I had developed T2. I fought hard to regain control over my body through diet and exercise but never really succeeded. I finally succumbed after suffering a stroke in 2014. There was no escaping the cocktail of medicines after that. They are probably my biggest cause for complaint. I feel like I am steadily losing control over my body and becoming a walking rattle of pills. I tried the low carb way, unsuccessfully, 1 year ago but have just recommenced this effort with renewed vigour as my HbA1c and weighing scales finally showed a flicker towards going downwards. Basically, all I wanted to say today is that it is good to have a rant and even throw a cushion or two but do not let this disease defeat you.

A flicker is good!
You're having a right old battle, but the very best of luck and well done for your brilliant attitude.

@devina I must be your twin. Or very similiar to my diabetic life, til I read as much as possible on here. Even my consultant is impressed now.
I had symptoms as a child but was turned away from gp surgery and told to bath more..... what for thrush and weight gain! :banghead:

The most important thing is where you are now.
This low carb way of eating gave me hope.
Hope to improve my diabetes and maybe one day drop my insulin therapy or it be in little units. The tough job for me is only metformin helps. (When safe to take, other than in tummy bug days.) I'm intolerant to so many type2 drugs now. I'm highly insulin resistant and even thou have lost.....4st in 10mths.....I'm still 9st overweight (bmi wise).
I'm awaiting bariatric surgery to help with that 9st of which I'm still working on.

That 4st loss has given me huge encouragement but I still get down days which are mainly due to near hypo bgs.
I had to adapt lchf to eventually get weight loss.
Low carbing has allowed me to lose weight and take nearly half the insulin units I was on.
My diabetic team are delighted.
I'm currently maintaining my weight til after xmas now. (So many, as me, struggle to maintain, so a bit of an experiment...for me).

Have a relook at low carb eating. It made a huge difference to my diabetes management and towards hope to the future.
I'm confident, with supoort from my diabetic team, that more improvements are on the way for me.
Consultant signed off bariatric surgery need but still a few boxes to tick before I see bariatric consultant. Their eating well plan needs adaption too for me to continue losing weight. I was only diabetic on the course so was given a dietician too. A very very good programme, if you need it.
My consultant asked me to consider it 4yrs ago but I downright refused to be interested. It is a major operation. Not to agreed on lightly.
Great diabetic reversal/remission is reported.

You have come to the right forum for varied experience but keeping your aims is the utmost important thing. I wish you the very best luck.
You can achieve your personal success here. :)

Thank you. You have my admiration for managing all those meds.

You mentioned having problem before with a low carb diet what was the problem?

Well done on your progress this time.

Your 4 stone weight loss is amazing. its all too easy to look at the total and think that's impossible, but every pound counts.

I started off 8 stone overweight and I am still 3 stones overweight. One thing I have noticed with the low carb way of life, is that because it feels more like a "lifestyle" change than an actual weight loss diet, it feels like it is more permanent. I guess only time will tell. I did lose the same weight the hard way many years ago and put the lot back on within a couple of years. This time it feels different.

You are 30% down from your total goal but every little bit puts you further forward towards success and 4 stones already puts you into the highly successful dieter category.

I recall the posts you were making a year ago when losing any weight before surgery seemed like an impossible dream - but you did it ! congratulations :)

Thank you.

I'm rubbish at losing weight but it came off and I honestly couldnt really work it out, but the penny dropped......less carbs but eatwell plate adapted.
I've had huge time and money spent on my efforts by the nhs so they have to take credit too.
They gave me a dietician who has carbs and cals book on her desk!!!
How can I fail?
Seeing her this week. She is realistic. No pressure over xmas and looking forward to her support til this 9st is off. She supports how carbs play a huge part in losing weight in patients like me.
Hugely insulin resistant.

Maybe one day we will get an insulin resistance only specialist who can specialise in that field only.
That alone would solve soooo much suffering.

Ps. Thank you.
I will pm you later if ok?

Sure, happy to chat privately.

I do think that one thing that people don't realise in all this is that when one talks about lowering carbs because it works, it seems a bit like one is peddling some magic potion.

We have all been told the same mantra for so long - a calorie is a calorie, eat less, move more and you will lose weight. Neither of these take into account the fact that not eating carbs is just "qualitatively different" not only in reducing blood sugar, but in the way your actual body responds to feeling hungry .

I spent most of my life on a low calorie diet starvingly hungry, today eating those very same level of calories I can not be hungry at all - that seems like a total magic trick as does the fact that once the body has got used to the low carb approach, simply not eating actually becomes viable. Whenever they do these studies showing that the difference between the two approaches is small when eating the same number of calories, it completely fails to take into account just how much easier it is to restrict total calories when your body is not screaming " eat something signals" all day long. I'm still not slim, maybe I never will be, but for the very first time in my life food no longer dominates my thoughts. I hope you can get to that position too.

Not a problem, per se, I just got discouraged by lack of results. Expectations too high, I suppose. Am in my 2 nd low carb week now and have already lost 1 kg. They only way is up!?! Or should I say 'down'!?

We'll smash the weight loss again after xmas, for sure.

Our friday weigh-in thread has gone a bit qiet compared to January's activity.I know I'll be plugging away again.

1kg loss is brilliant. Well done.
I forgot to ask, are you on metformin?
