Hello all,

I am posting on behalf of my husband, he is a type 2 diabetic. Currently recovering from Charcot. Charcot was diagnosed in Feb 2017 (After we had been on holiday for 4 weeks walking on it) as was not caught in two appointments that he went to In January complaining of a painful foot!! (We knew nothing about Charcot, so assumed the docs were correct when told him to rest it and carry on as normal - even went on a long haul flight!)

Anyways, he has been in a full contact cast since 23rd February, and has been off work since (Work required he is on his feet)

Today he has been allowed to go into a temporary cast as has had his second appointment for his orthotic boots. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions with regards to what they wear on their feet when at home? Hubby used to be in slippers but the woman today remarked that he should be in his boots when time comes, now im not sure exactly who wants to be sat in full boots all day every day, but it doesnt seem feasible to me. Obviously if he goes out, even into the garden or is going to be stood any period of time he will be in his boots. Does anyone have any links for places to get something suitable? I have been searching but theres so much information about!!

I appreciate we are a little premature as looking to get his boots finally in about 3 /4 weeks but this process has been long (although shorter than many) and for a man in his 30's he is desperate for some normality.

Also, does anyone have any experience with companies making orthotic steel toe caps? We are dealing with occupational health at his work and trying to get these sorted, the hospital are reluctant to help with the measurements, I assume they could be held liable.

Any assistance anyone has on footwear or charcot in general would be so greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Gemma

Is his foot out of shape? My husband now wearing Dr Martens high boots and so far is ok. Goes to podiatrist every 6 weeks and they check. I would say if foot shape ok then get ordinary toetectors but a size up then put ortho inserts in. I would’ve thought you could also get from the makers of the shoes at the hospital.

My DIL has CMT and was having more problems with her feet. She tends to wear hi-tops (She has some very colourful Doc Martins) but the local orthopaedic department also make her made to measure insoles and ankle braces to encourage her feet into the right position. They get replaced every few months. Made a huge difference to her.

I'm not sure if these companies will help, @GemsElmo, and I have to say Victoria Beckham wouldn't be seen dead in any of them, but two people I know who have had foot ops have found them quite useful:

They're not cheap and most certainly aren't what you would call fashionable, especially as your husband is only in his 30s. I hope you'll be able to find him something suitable.
