Ketones! Testing Type 1

I have been diagnosed about 18 month with type 1, I'm doing OK but still learning!

I have been reading about ketones, should I be testing for ketones or should I be only testing when I am unwell?

Should the hospital have given me something to test for ketones? non of my diabetic team have ever mentioned ketones to me.

Sorry if its a silly question, I have a bit of a tummy bug (i think) at the min and am being sick!

I am testing my blood regularly and am doing OK!

Thanks

Catherine

When should I test for ketones?

You should test for ketones if you are unwell with any of the following conditions.

• fever
• vomiting or diarrhoea
• abdominal pain
• greatly increased thirst or volume of urine
• very high blood sugars
• Pregnancy
• Any physical or emotional stress
• If your breath smells sweet or fruity

Very high ketones and very high Bg levels are a medical emergency and you should get immediate treatment. It is important as a T1 that you should have the equipment to test for ketones so ask for the strips to be prescribed. Some meters are able to record ketone levels in the blood.

Hi Catherine, when I was diagnosed they also didn't give me anything but yes you should have Ketostix on repeat prescription (you can buy them if you have to, but everything's shut today). You can also get an Optium Xceed monitor which does both blood and ketone testing strips for fingerprick tests.

However, if you're being sick, the rules all kind of change as you can become dehydrated quickly and therefore make large amounts of ketones quickly. I was at a party once, when newly diagnosed, and there was a Type 1 girl there who told me she was given the rule that if you've been sick 3 times you need to go to A+E. I was once sick a few times (turned out to be a reaction to antibiotics). I called my GP for advice, and he told me to go straight to A+E.

So I'd suggest at the very least you call the out of hours GP service for advice but if it was me I'd be at A+E. You might end up wasting 4hrs of your time but it's better that than take a turn for the worse at home and since you have no way to test your ketones, you should let the hospital test you instead and if they say you're fine, then all's well that ends well. You can also ask them for a tub of Ketostix when you leave. Good luck!

As you are unwell you really need to be testing for ketones in your urine, ask your gp to add them to your script but in the mean time you can buy them in your local chemist and cost around £3.50 for a box of 50 strips.

Have to say I'm feeling a lot better now!

Thank you so much for all the advice, I will speak to my diabetic team about some testing strips!

This forum is great, learnt more from here than from an of my medical team.

Happy New Everyone x
