HI

I went to the doctors with kidney pain the other week and after 2 blood tests have had a meeting with the diabetic nurse, I have some booklets and have been told my blood tests came out at 83 mmol and 86 mmol which is apparently high?

I have been put on Metfromin 500mg twice a day and am currently reading around the subject - it looks like I need a low carb\blood sugar level diet.

I was wandering if it would be worth investing in a blood glucose testing kit and if so can anyone recommend one?

many thanks

will

Definitely get a blood glucose meter. I expect someone will be along shortly with links to the cheapest one to get online.

See www.dietdoctor.com for some advice of which low carb foods to eat.

In general, avoid high carb foods such as breakfast cereals, bread, potatoes, rice and pasta. Also avoid fruit juice and fruit such as bananas and grapes. You can eat more fat in your food e.g. cheese, avocados which replaces the carbs you are avoiding.

Hi @selectcase Welcome to the forum - am tagging @daisy1 for her new members information which is a good starting point for you. Many members recommend using a blood glucose testing kit to test before meals and 90 minutes afterwards so you can see the effect of diet on your levels, it's also useful to track your results and as a conversation to have with your team. Best wishes J

Diabetes (but I may learn to love it)
Ask your doctor of the practice nurse about testing kits, as the strips you need for doing the testing can sometimes be prescribed for certain types of testers. You just need to know which ones

Hi and welcome,

Yes, your blood test (HbA1c) was high and needs to be brought down. Your plan to follow a low carb diet should do the trick, and your own glucose meter will definitely help. Without one you are working blind. It will guide you to find a suitable low carb diet and tell you at a glance which foods your body reacts badly to.

The most popular meters for self funding T2's are the Codefree and the Tee2 because the strips are much cheaper than other meters, and you need a lot of strips. You can't buy them in pharmacies.

Try here for the Codefree meter
http://homehealth-uk.com/product-category/blood-glucose/blood-glucose-monitor/

and here for the extra strips
http://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/sd-codefree-test-strips-to-be-used-only-with-the-sd-monitor/

There are discount codes if you buy in bulk.
5 packs 264086
10 packs 975833

The Tee2 is here and the meter is free.

Don’t forget to check the box that you have diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for either meter)

Hi
As others have said and I agree with, reduce your carb intake, it has worked for me. I was diagnosed in Oct 2017, I went for my first check up last week and my HbA1c results have come down from 10.8 to 6.3. I wasn't told to reduce carbs by the diabetes nurse but chose to do it after reading all the success stories here. My cholesterol was good before my diagnoses and has also come down since Oct so the worry about eating fats hasn't been an issue for me, likewise blood pressure wasn't an issue but is lower now than it was, probably due to the exercise I've been doing. I have a lot more energy, don't feel hungry and feel I sleep better since changing my eating habits and I've lost over 2 and a half stone, so as far as I'm concerned its a win on all fronts. I was also told I didn't need to test my levels and for a while I didn't, however curiosity got the better of me, I wanted to know if I was doing the right things? It turns out I was obviously doing something right and now I use it to monitor myself until my next appointment. My readings haven't gone above 6.4 since I've been testing myself and average around 5.5
Good luck I hope you have success too.

@selectcase,
As well as the low carb stuff, if you are overweight, lose it. It makes a massive difference.

Hi Will,

I was at your level of HBA1C 85 last Sept 2017.

My endocrinologist said only last Tuesday that my diabetes is now in “remission” at 38 HBA1C.

Hope this will encourage you, and welcome!

@selectcase

Hello Will and welcome to the Forum :) Here is the Basic Information we give to new members and I hope it will be useful to you. Ask as many questions as you want and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED DIABETICS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you'll find well over 235,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.

There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:
  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates
Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Read more on carbohydrates and diabetes.

Over 145,000 people have taken part in the Low Carb Program - a 10 week structured education course that is helping people lose weight and reduce medication dependency by explaining the science behind carbs, insulin and GI.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:
  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to blood glucose testing supplies.
