Diabetes and Miscarriage

Hi everybody

I have type 1 diabetes and I am currently on an insulin pump.
My hba 1c was 8.6% when I first attended pre-conception clinic and with a massive amount of effort I managed to get it down to 6.8%. I am aware that guidelines suggest that for pregnancy it is ideal to have your hba1c below 6.1% but when I was at 7.2% it was advised that I should start trying for a baby after weighing up all the different factors (age, stress to myself, the improvement in hba1c). I have been taking folic acid for a long time (poss 6 months), I continue to get tighter control of my blood, i have done everything by the book. I fell pregnant straight away and felt like I had won the lottery! Very sadly, I have been informed that my baby has died. I am absolutely devastated. I know that nobody can say exactly why these things happen but I just wondered if anybody has an idea on whether this could have been caused by my diabetes? I am not blaming myself but i do want to make sure everything is as it should be before I try again. I cannot go through this again and I want to make sure I do everything I possibly can do to try and have a healthy baby. This is my second miscarriage (first was a long time ago and diabetes was very out of control at the time).
Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Hi SugarPlumFairy

I too have had miscarriages, but way before I had Type 2. You do go through the did I do something wrong to cause this etc. You have to put it in perspective of what a miracle conception is and that the odds for something going wrong is quite high anyway.

Get yourself in the best possible health and try again.

Even after nearly 28 years, I don't forget the first miscarriage I had, but my son wouldn't be here today if I had that baby. My mind says there was something wrong with it and nature did what it does best.

All the best.

Sorry to hear of your miscarriage.

I've had miscarriage's before and after becoming diabetic (T1) as well as carried 2 babies successfully with diabetes (and 1 successful one before diabetes) even though high blood glucose levels will increase the risk if a miscarriage happens you can't be truly certain whether this caused it or not!

When I lost my first baby many years ago now, my GP told me that 1-5 women miscarry their first pregnancy, but most will carry on to have successful pregnancies...

All you can do, is keep as good control of your diabetes as you can, and when you ready to try again, try not to stress yourself out too much over fearing the same might happen again, as it probably won't...

So sorry to hear of your sad news. In 1998 I suffered a miscarraige at 8 weeks, it was very sad, but I thought that's natures way. Maybe the baby was deformed, maybe it was just one of those things. I had a bleed, I went to the doctors, she examined me inside and thought everything was okay, but I still needed to go to the hospital, which I did. On the scan the baby had died there was no heartbeat, and after 3 days the miscarraige happened naturally, I still have the picture of the scan, I was 40 yrs old. Then in 2000, age 42, I had my darling daughter and never looked back, I had had diabetes for 11 yrs then ( diagnosed in 1989) and if the tragic miscarraige didn't happen in 1998, then I wouldn't have had my 11 yr old daughter. Good things do happen and I wish you all the best for the future and you never know, one day you may have a beautiful little baby of your own, never give up. Take care and best wishes :)

Just wanted to thank you all for your kind words and sharing your stories.
My miscarriage has now completed naturally and I am going to try again in a few weeks.
I have continued taking my folic acid and keeping tight control of my blood sugar so hopefully things will be ok on that front.

Oh SugarPlumFairy, I'm so very sorry to hear that you lost your baby.

I know from bitter bitter experience how utterly heartbreaking it is.

I don't know about the numbers when it comes to links between Dibaetes and Pregnancy / miscarriage, but I know from all my losses many moons ago how you can be feeling. I had a stillborn son in 2006 and in 2007 a twin ectopic pregnancy...so no babies for us.

I wish you all the luck in the world and will keep everything crossed for you in the future.
Just be kind to yourself and give yourself a little time.

Hi Sugar

Sorry to hear for your lost. Today I found that my baby didn't make it
I'm think I'm on the same page as you and at the moment I'm blaming myself although I think we would never know and maybe it was happens for a right reason but doesn't mean won't have our little ones to take home one day. I can understand how you fell but know that you aren't alone and because we got diabetic had a miscarriage. Out there are so many healthy mums and happens to them too
My though are with you and wish you soon found those 2 pink lines again xxx

I am T2 but I have had four miscarriages. I then went on to have three children who I call my extra large sons.
There arn't any words that can bring you the comfort that you need but one of the things I found most important is that I gave myself time to greive. My first child was born when I had given up all hope, thirteen years later I had my second and then my youngest just four years later when I was thirty seven years old. My point is that you should never give up hope and that you should never try to place blame, I never found the cause of my losses. Please accept my heartfelt condolences on your loss. Hugs.

I'm so sorry, your loss must be making you feel broken. I haven't been through your pain, so I don't want to presume to know how much it must hurt.

I just wanted to reach out with a virtual hug from an internet stranger.
You sound extraordinarily strong. Take heart and hope from what everyone here has posted. xx

Dear SugarPlumFairy
I’m so sorry for your loss, I’ve been type 1 Diabetic since 1979 not very tight control over my blood sugars but I got them in good control and in 1993 got pregnant, I had a lot of Pain at 6weeks gone so my specialist sent me for a scan, it revealed that I was having Twins. My specialist didn’t know what to treat first my Diabetes or my Twin pregnancy, it was hard work at the time but on 30th March 1994 I had my Twin girls, 7 weeks early. They were small but for 7 weeks early were 4lb 2oz and 4lb 6oz which meant they only stayed in special care. 2 years passed and I conceived again, thankfully only one baby and hard work looking after 2 year old twin toddlers and keeping my diabetes in tight control but after extra care from my diabetes team I had a little boy, 3 weeks early. He was 7lb 6oz but I was told that Diabetics usually have big babies so if I hadn’t gone into Labour at 37 weeks I would of been induced at 38 weeks, I’m not sure if it’s still the same now. I’m just trying to give you a boost to say keep your blood sugar levels as tight as you can as if I can do a twin pregnancy with Diabetes and then 1 baby after that you can do the same, once your there you will feel very proud and I wish you very well all my love Jade0106 xxx
