Unusual high blood glucose readings

Hi all. I am type 1 diabetic. I have noticed for last four days my blood glucose hasn’t dropped below 20 even once even with the best care of injections and regular checks. My diabetes is usually well controlled. I have recently been admitted to hospital for different reason where they had me on sliding scales and different insulin. Since the discharge I’ve lost all control. Not touching much carbs at all, maybe a sandwich or couple daily if any. My long lasting insulin is Toujeo and I’ve already increased daily dose of it. My active one is Novorapid and I normally need only 3 units per meal on non and keep my sugars at 7-8 . At the moment I am forced to take more than 8 u it’s per meal and with hardly any carbs in the my sugars stay sane high or even go higher.. I’ve checked needles and always rotate with injection areas. I’ve been on Toujeo for two and a half weeks now. It was Tressiba before. Not easy to get to see diabetes specialist in any immediate future. Has anyone got an idea what could be wrong? I have been monitoring everything literally hourly and no luck! What are any possible reasons for that? Anyone? Anything?

A few thoughts.

I’ve been on Toujeo for two and a half weeks now.

Seeing as you're so new to Toujeo, might you just be needing to adjust the amount?

I have recently been admitted to hospital for different reason

Won't ask what the reason was, but if there's any lingering infection which your immune system is still fighting off, that frequently throws levels out, so maybe consider "sick day" rules?

Have you tried a new vial of Toujeo? I had a really bad experience with lantus a few weeks back - every time a bolus shot wore off, I'd start racing up and needed major novorapid corrections to keep in range. Concluded that there was something dodgy with that batch, so changed it for another. Maybe worthwhile testing to see if there's big rises after your last bolus wears out.

Alicia 20+ is high. Are you checking for ketones when they're that high? I'm not asking what you were admitted to hospital, but has that resolved now?

I'm not an insulin user, so wouldn't like to comment too much more that that, but others will be along I'm sure.

On an aside, it could be useful to add your diabetes type to your profile, as clearly some of the advice offered will differ from T1, to T2 or T3c.

You absolutely don't have to do it if you prefer not, but you can make that change via you account settings. You can access your account by clicking or hovering on your user name at the top right hand side of the "page", then selecting Personal Details. If you scroll down you'll see the option to select your Diabetes Type.

Good luck getting those numbers down!

Only blood pressure and reflux pills

Your blood pressure med's 'might' be an issue. What are you taking, have you looked up the side effects?

I’ve been in them for years. Only 5mg Rampril

Well I can't find anything too negative about Ramipril and diabetes - there are actually suggestions that it lowers blood glucose on some websites.

If you go to the search bar in the top right hand corner - you can find a few threads on Ramipril though.
