hello everyone I’m josh, I’m 21 and have been diabetic type 1 since I was 3 years old, I have always been well controlled until the last few years, my care is very inconsistent seeing a new specialist every single time, I am trying to get back under control on my own as the specialists don’t seem to want to help me, does anyone have any tips on how to get your hba1c down and get running at normal levels again?

Hi @Fenwicky96, I hope you just mean that it's a different doctor you see every time you're at the clinic, and not a different consultant. Your consultant is the real specialist, so you should ask to see him/her at your next appointment. . . . Having said that, many of us think that the DSNs are more experienced than the doctors. You could ask for an appointment with your DSN and ask for advice on how to improve your results.

Different things could be suggested. If you haven't done a DAFNE course (or similar), this would be useful. If your nurse or consultant can't find anything new for you to try (timing of bolus, type or timing of basal(s), the type of food you eat, exercise . . .) they might suggest the insulin pump. If they do, grab it with both hands, as it gives you much better control.

Good luck!

Welcome to the forums @Fenwicky96 ,

When it comes to controlling blood sugars, I am not being overly successful myself at the moment so I won't try to advise you.

You might find it helpful to give some clues about your diet, medication and lifestyle. There are quite a few experienced T1's here so I'm sure you'll get something out of joining us.

I found dr Bernstein’s approach very helpful, it’s a bit strict but I had a tough time getting a decent hba1c and I’ve been diabetic almost 19 years now. It’s turned mine around no end. Even if you don’t want to follow it to the letter as your still quite young and have a lot of new experiences ahead of you still to have and tasting different foods is one of them as you travel and see more of the world.

I watched his diabetic university first on YouTube.

Here’s session one..

Do you have a DSN? If so, she might be able to provide some continuity in your diabetes management. If you've been told you've to do the DAFNE course but have been waiting a long time, ask your DSN if she can make sure you get on a course. If this doesn't work, make an official complaint about your treatment (or lack of it) and send a copy to your MP.

Hi. Can you let us know what insulin regime you are on and whether you carb-count for meals? Do you have a low-carb diet?
