Hello friends. After being diagnosed with type 2 in Jan 2016. I now have my diabetes under control sort off (HBA1C was 55 in Mar 2018 down from 122 in Jan 2016).
Tomorrow I am going out with friends for a coffee I have not done this in 2 years. I am not sure what I can have if my friends all choose a coffee place. Any suggestions.. tips or advice appreciated.

Are you just talking coffee, or nibbles as well?

I meet my friends for coffee regularly, and in various coffee shops. Personally I stick to black coffee because I like it, but coffee with real cream is also ideal. The only thing to really avoid is too much milk, and definitely skinny or semi skinny milk.

If your friends tuck into cake it wouldn't be wise to join in. :)

I hope you have a lovely time, and I hope you haven't been avoiding these occasions because of your diabetes? There really is no need to.

I stopped going out .:(. Does any place do a sugar free. I don't like black coffee I used to have a latte previously ( the one loaded with 17 spoons of sugar:)) I need to find a very weak coffee or tea.[/QUOTE]

no cakes or nibbles for me. I need to find a drink I can have without being odd or awkward , something just to keep everyone company and not spike my blood sugars.

Don't you like coffee with real cream (not the pretend squirty stuff)? Not unlike a proper latte to be honest. If not, then have tea or coffee with milk, but not half a cup full of milk! To be honest, one coffee (flat white?) is not going to kill you or have any long lasting effects on your blood sugars.

What a shame you stopped going out. With some forward planning there is no need to stop socialising in cafes and restaurants.

I do two milk two sweetener for my coffee and it works for me, rarely I'll get a two sugar two cream because since I cut back my sugar the two and two is too sweet haha.

Take care

I need to find a very weak coffee or tea.
I don't drink any coffee (something I have disliked since childhood) but never have problems finding tea or herbal tea where I have control of the teabag so can make it as strong or weak as I like.
All the chain coffee shops (Costa, Starbuck, etc.) have no trouble with this.
And small local independent places usually provide a pot where I can take the teabag out when it is the strength I want: it gives the saucer a purpose.

Since living in Germany, I stopped drinking milk in my tea.
But many places let you add your own milk so you don't have to flood it if you don't want to.

If your friends are eating cake and you don't want to be too left out, some places provide nuts which are low carb.
Or cheese and biscuits ... where you can hold the biscuits.

I suppose that one in a coffee will drink coffee, and it's normal to ask for artificial sweeter instead of sugar.
I don't know what kind of coffee you're going, but on a lot of them I have seen that they could serve ham or cheese.
For instance a really posh coffee and ice parlor in Turin http://www.caffefiorio.it/le-specialita?jjj=1523977932948 has a buffet with anchovies, cheese, peppers, baked onions...

Unfortunately if you'll go in a chain coffee it's difficult you could find this variety of food.

(by the way it's near the Mole Antonelliana you'll see as my avatar ;-) )

Enjoy the company, if you don't like coffee then tea or water are always nice in good company. no one will care what you drink, only that you rock up and be awesome

I think I will try the coffee with real cream. Or maybe a Tea with real cream. We will probably end up in a costa or star bucks I hope I find something I enjoy. I haven't liked being a hermit since I was diagnosed.

Starbucks usually charge, but with Costa it is usually free. Other coffee chains are available.

Then dont be a hermit....dont let it rule your life...go out..,dont worry about a coffee and slice of cake once in a while...if it makes your bg rise it will be a little challenge for you to get it back under control...go out enjoy yourself!

some places provide nuts
Good idea, and the OP could also take some with her. No-one serving in a cafe is going to mind a person bringing their own nuts.
PS Sorry, I see the OP doesn't want nibbles. However, IMO it's not a bad idea to have a few low carb ones in reserve just in case temptation strikes.

If you like your drinks sweet and you don't mind artificial sweeteners, I recommend the old-fashioned saccharine. I recently tried it for the first time in 75 years, and I am quite impressed. To my taste, one tiny tablet makes a hot drink far sweeter than I need it to be. Saccharine is very cheap and comes in little canisters that would fit easily into a handbag and you would not be conspicuous adding it to your drink. Indeed, I think people watching their weight often do this.

Hello and welcome A_Sun. I often go to Starbucks and Costa and they both serve teas with the milk served separately in small jugs. Costa usually give you a choice of whole milk or skimmed milk, they serve tea in a teapot and there are sweeteners if you need them. Relax and enjoy!:)

@A_Sun Our local Coffee shop ( Pret a Manger) sometimes runs out of cream, but I count an americano with full fat milk as 2g carbs which is quite manageable I think, even on a very low carb diet.

I hope you have a lovely time meeting your friends again and this outing gives you confidence to go out and enjoy yourself some more.

You could always have a Diet Coke or Pepsi if you like them. I always have nuts or low carb snack bars in my bag incase I can’t bear watching my friends eat cake! One friend of mine always insists on getting the same as me when we go out :)
