Awww I do so sympathise with you and I know you are worried but it won't be half as bad as you are thinking, even if you are diabetic. Like you I was a healthy eater .. walked everywhere .. didn't smoke or drink alcohol, and no family link to the disease. I was only slightly overweight with a waist measurement of 34/35 but I found myself a member of the Type 2 family! Like yourself I too was very scared but as you learn more (as you will on here) you realise that it's not s bad as it appears and that you CAN control it if you take the wonderful advice given on this forum. I hope someone else can add further to this for you

I can't have it often
Eating healthy means different things to diabetics and non-diabetics. For us, carbs are not so good.

It's not a death sentence, you didn't do anything wrong, and that kid of yours is going to see what mountains can be moved if you are motivated enough; quite an important lesson! You don't have to be fat to get T2; you could be slim on the outside, fat on the inside. It kinda packs onto the pancreas and liver, but it doesn't show to look at you. What's healthy for regular people, isn't for us. Your idea, and most people's, really, of healthy food includes a whole lot of carbs. Potatoes, pasta, bread, cereal, corn, rice... None of which are good for us, no matter whether it's white or brown. All carbs turn into sugar once ingested, and we can't process that. Fruits have a lot of fructose, which gets stored onto the liver as fat. Not so healthy after all! (Though berries are okay in moderation). Everything you think you know about diet can go out the window. Carbs are bad, fat is your new best friend, proteïne a close second. That's the short version. Your doc will probably start you on metformin or gliclazide, possibly a statin... Those things can certainly help, but diet keeps Type 2 from progressing to complications. So it really is worth looking into. Low carb, high fat will help, if you're interested. (This place has a low carb program, and if you need more recipies/video's etc, dietdoctor.com is good too). I was off the meds and into the non-diabetic range in a few months. (And I did have weight to lose. And did. I was 102 kilo's, down to 81,5 now. :) ). What it comes down to... It's bewildering at first. But buy yourself a meter, find out what certain foods do, (if your mmol/l goes up more than 2 between pre-meal and 2 hours after first bite, the meal was too carby), learn everything you can here and ask questions as much as you like. You're not alone in this. And complications aren't unavoidable!!!! I've seen diabetes take people... But they didn't know about diet, or anything, really... Their doc's didn't tell them, there was no internet then, and the whole low carb thing wasn't as well-known then as it is now. A lot of docs, nurses and specialists are a bit behind the times, but me... I was going to get T2 sooner or later. I'm glad I got it now, and not 10 years ago. Diabetic dark ages. You'll be okay. And I wish someone had told me that when I was diagnosed, because I spent months thinking I had one foot in the grave. Honest. It's not hopeless. Not these days. Not anymore.

6 is at the very lower end of the prediabetic HbA1c, so I have no doubt you'll be able to lower it into normal ranges with adjustments to your lifestyle. You'll find lots of helpful information here and the people here are supportive - don't be afraid to ask questions! Lots of people here living full and happy lives with diabetes, young and old. Good luck!

The media attitude of ascribing blame is doing a lot of harm - but just because it is prevalent doesn't mean that it is true.
Whichever type of diabetes you have - it can be managed.
I am lucky - I was diagnosed as full blown diabetic and so I cut down on carbohydrates, and in 6 months I was seeing not just no longer diabetic but normal results, and it was easy.
Some people do make a big thing about 'in remission' or 'cured' and just what they mean - personally I think it is irrelevant - I can eat low carb no problem, and that makes diabetes not a problem too - after 18 months from diagnosis I have no problems, don't need tablets, and I feel a lot younger.

@arpi.ramesh

Hello Arpi Ramesh and welcome to the Forum. Here is the Basic Information we give to new members and I hope you will find it interesting and useful. Ask as many questions as you want and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you'll find well over 235,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.

There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:
  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates
Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Read more on carbohydrates and diabetes.

Over 145,000 people have taken part in the Low Carb Program - a 10 week structured education course that is helping people lose weight and reduce medication dependency by explaining the science behind carbs, insulin and GI.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:
  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to blood glucose testing supplies.

Got call from GP regarding my annual sugar test and am diabetic with reading 6 HbA1c, Booked for review with nurse on 19th of this month.

I understand from online 6 HbA1c is prediabetic ,is my understanding right . This wait is killing me . Am stressed ,i have 3 year old little girl and i breakdown every time i see her play.

Sorry to hear, firstly, take a deep breath, and start to put it into perspective slowly and think positively not negatively OK.

Not a doctor, but your number seems at the bottom of the ladder? Its a warning sign, if any consolation, I was informed diabetic, it was a lab error, I got 2nd opinion, finally, and although next test was still viewed diabetic in Spain, back home New Zealand the same result they view as pre diabetic, bottom ladder, but warning caution do something about it. So how crazy is my situation inbetween two countries, diabetic spain, v. pre diabetic New Zealand.

Everyone is different, positively speaking, I am sure if you do simple lifestyle changes, and of course listen to what the doctors has to tell you, I quote my situation to try to give you a picture it can be controlled, and numbers reversed, not everyone is the same, diet change and lifestyle seems to show great results for so many, I too ate organic foods, healthy lifestyle surfing, I was given a high blood pressure pill that side effects were CAUSE or WORSEN sugars!! and ended up with high sugars. Dont think you have done something wrong, think back if you have had any medications, whatever, or however the tests show as they have, there is light and hope, dont worry.

What did I do, changed life style,
  • Eat Keto low carb no potatoes, bread, pasta rice now for 1 year see www.dietdoctor.com
  • Substitute these items for much more tasty foods, do I miss them no! love my new way of eating.
  • Introduced more exercise over the surfing. Walking min 5 klm a day every day, I have a tread so I jump on tread after breakfast, lunch dinner only for 10 mins to burn off any carbs if any eaten.
  • No snacking inbetween meals,important.
  • Last but not least intermittent fast 3 days a week, so easy, I do it days I want and prefer, thats the beauty of intermittent fasting, when it suits YOU. two mornings no breakfast, only coffee no milk sugar, one day no breakfast or lunch then eating dinner eve.
Result, turned my pre diabetes to normal range non diabetic two weeks ago. Lost 24 kilos inbetween and eating super keto foods, 23cm off the waist, and feeling fantstic fit and happy.

So, I hope you take a leaf out of my success little story, just motivation, will power, and you can do this for your little girl,
and my suggestion always worthwhile to get a second opinion.

I do hope this gives you an indication, hope and positive view, small changes can give big results....good luck.
