Lantus and Levemir are the two mostly commonly used long activing insulins these days. Humalin I is long acting, but most people need to have 2 injections per 24 hours. This can give more flexibility than 1 long acting injection per day, so not necessarily a disadvantage.

How long is long?

Lantus & Levemir are the 2 that are around the most at the moment along with Tresiba as a newer option.
The older Isophane insulins (Humulin I, Insulatard, Insuman Basal) are shorter (intermediate) acting but used to be the long acting basal insulin of choice with multiple injections per day of them.
These are all synthetic or have the same sequence as human insulin.

There are still other older types of long acting insulin available, Insulin Zinc Suspension (Lente) and Protamine Zinc Insulin (PZI). These two types of insulin are still derived from animals - beef or the lente and PZI. Isophane insulin can be animal also, beef or pork.

There is insulin zinc suspension Lente but many specialists do not know it exists and I have had heated discussions with my specialist who has told me it no longer exists as it is animal based
